saw one of those portable roadside signs that you never get to read whole message but looks like the speed brackets have been metricated. Instead of do 16kph (old 10 MPH ) over the posted speed limit looks to be 10- 20kph over is now the second tier in NSW.

Anyone know??

I know we get our first level of fine at 3km/h over the legal limit - that's not even within ADRules for speedo accuracy!!! Ludicrist!

i no vic was 3%+3km over as in a 100km zone you could do 110km and get away with it as i have not lived there for over 10 years so i do not know what it is like now .
up there in the NT we get about 10km over if mister plod is in a good mood and over that u are gone but if it is a cam u are gone i think a cam will give u about 3km then u get one in the mail .

I live in VIC and the last speeding ticket I got (about 2 years ago, c'mon I'm no hoon!) was doing 87kmh on an 80kmh zone, so I am pretty sure 3% + 3kmh rule does not apply anymore...

I reckon it's more like the 3kmh rule on its own... again, well under the speedo accuracy!

I believe that the ADR's for speedo accuracy has changed from +/-10% (which was reflected in the police speeding guidelines) to now being more like +0/-10%. This being the case, your speedo will never show a lower speed than you are actually travelling.
Although ADR's are not retroactive, so it could be argued that the speeding laws can't be applied to a vehicle older than this ADR update.
Then again, a speed limit is by definition a LIMIT, so its difficult to argue much.

try and explain it is a limit, ie a maximum, and you don't have to travel AT the limit to all the bloody idiots driving on the highways!!

people get dumber every time you think about it. and the police will book you for whatever they like if they are told by their bosses they need revenue.

ADR is for speedo to be optimistic (ie, not show lower than the speed you are travelling) - at a constant speed. I believe it is 4% tolerance, but only at certain speeds, 40, 80, 120 for most cars from memory. Speedos are not instantaneous devices and aren't very accurate during quick acceleration or deceleration. Someone dig up the ADR link on the net, I've seen it here before.

Tyres can still have a 4% diameter tolerance also.

Not sure about metricating the fine levels? It has been the same in all states of Austraia for 9 years now, it was 0-15, 16-30, 31-45 and 45-60+ over now has gone in increments of 10 instead. Just means much more likely to get a lower level fine and demerits than you were before.

At least in NSW, with fixed cameras and highway patrol cars you used to be given a 10% leeway, unless it was a double points period or they were going for the jugular. I believe this may now be lower.

Here is the current (2006-on) ADR 18/03 formula for accuracy of speedo:

0 ≤ (V1 - V2) ≤ 0.1 V2 + 4 km/h

where:
V1 is the speed displayed
V2 is the true speed

18.5. SPEEDOMETERS AND ODOMETERS (ALL VEHICLES)

18.5.1. Speedometers

18.5.1.1. Unless otherwise 'Approved', every vehicle shall be fitted with a
speedometer which shall:

18.5.1.1.1. indicate vehicle speed only in kilometres per hour and

18.5.1.1.2. indicate the actual vehicle speed, for all speeds above 40 km/h, to an accuracy of ± 10 percent

18.5.1.2. The speedometer shall be installed so that its indication is readily visible
to the driver when seated in the normal driving position.

18.5.2. Odometers

18.5.2.1. Every vehicle other than L-group vehicles shall be fitted with an
odometer which shall:

18.5.2.1.1. indicate distance travelled in one kilometre units (or less) from 1 to
999,999 kilometres; at

18.5.2.1.2. indicate the actual distance travelled by the vehicle to an accuracy of ±4 per cent.

18.5.2.2. Every vehicle of category LC and LD shall be fitted with an odometer
which shall:

18.5.2.2.1. indicate distance travelled in one kilometre units from I to 99,999
kilometres and

18.5.2.2.2. indicate the actual distance travelled by the vehicle to an accuracy of ± 4 percent
