4WD tester

Just been talking to a Swiss guy that worked for the Red Cross and was telling me he had been offered several 4WD vehicles to test in pretty rough conditions. In the deserts of Somalia he got a LandRover Discovery that lasted bout 18,000 km before it was retired. The company wanted to spend money on recovering it but was advised that the condition it was in was not economically viable. As a comparison he manages to kill V8 Diesel Landcruisers in 50 to 60,000km ! The sand is so fine it gets in everywhere and stuffs them! After just one week the side pockets INSIDE the doors were full of the fine sand!
Also telling me about a river crossing in Chechnya (sp?). The water was at or above door handle level and the beast started to float and go down the river sideways. His training came into action, opened the doors to sink the beast back down to the river bed got traction and got outta there
