Crazy passenger laws in Vic

G'day all.

Recently in vic we've had a 2 door lancer with 8 people or something in it strike a power pole or something in melbourne. The police chief commissioner, Christine Nixon, had to make a statement that included something a long the lines of the driver can only be charged with wreckless driving and cannot be charged with an offense of too many passengers if all seatbelts were used.

Now I'm all down with that but - if you have a ute you're not allowed to have anyone in the rear cargo area... What's the go with this?! Cruisin in the back of a ute is so much better than being crammed into a tiny tin can! I remember doing it when I was a kid, we had an awesome time!!

Then a night or two after the 2 door lancer incident we had 3 14 year old boys seriously injured when they stacked a stolen quad bike into a power pole at 60km/h... Smart move!

If you want to do anything stupid on the roads to add to the carnage, this seems to be the week for it - not that I condone that sort of behaviour on the road.

if i can say one thing about this it would be this.....those of us here that have kids dont want to have to be called to ID you.please for god sake slow down and think for just a second....have your fun by all means but come home at the end of it....i was in the NT fire service and a security officer for many years....i know i have seen enought death to last me 5 life times.....plan to grow old.

agree 100%

Trouble is few people understand the forces involved in a collision - even at moderate speeds.

for example in a roll over crash (no such thing as an 'accident' - people cause accidents) you pull 8-10G without trying. Imagine being unrestrained or ejected at that force. Deadly

Possibly, but riding in the back of a ute still a very very very bad idea. We had two family friends killed doing that, the ute lost control very slightly at low speed on some gravel near the side of the road, but the slight jerk when it righted itself after gaining full traction again was enough to fling them out.

I have been part of a search party for a bloke that hit a bridge at 140 in an old school datto with a seat belt he would have been dead with it and an airbag chances would be much better but without either he went through the windscreen and over the bonnet. We hours looking for him untill the local cop knocked on the door and got him out of bed he had walked the last two K's home and got only a few cuts and scratches. And yet a parmedic freind got called to a carpark where they had done all the right things and died at a little over 20k's an hour.
But on another note I looked everywhere in the states for a cheap pair of jump seats for my brumby to see if I could get them certified!

I was always under the impression that if a vehicle has seatbelts for 5 passengers - 5 passengers is the maximum occupants of the vehicle. How can the police commisioner say that putting 8people into a vehicle designed for 5 be OK?

Well he has a very good point as the complience plate under the bonnet says only 5 passengers although on the spot it might be a little hard to verify! But it poses the question how many people have been knocked back for rego for having bucket seats instead of a bench seat!

All I can say is, If the car is good enough, take it to Willowbank Raceway (Drags at Ipswich Qld)...not on the streets.
