hi i was just wanting peoples opinion on what they think i should do.
about a month ago now i bought a subaru brumby of a member from this forum who i better not name but in the first week (i have not done any serious driving in it) i had to replace the radiator and water pump this was about a week process then one of my lash adjusters went and i am now up for replacing one of them but the brumby has had a heart transplant from a EA81 to a EA82 and becuase there is no room the get the rocker covers off i have to take the hole engine out to do this. the machanic that i have working on the car reckons that he had put thicker oil and some sort of valve condion in there to cover up the ticking of the lash adjusters i just curious of wat people think of this.
thanks

if you put really thick oil in it would have the oppisite effect...would be too thick and couse more of a tick...i put thick oil in my lib motor and found i had to go back to thinner stuff..10 or 15w to get oil to flow right

Unfortunately it is 'caveat emptor' let the buyer beware. We all take risks when we buy goods privately. Perhaps inspection by qualified mechanics before the sale may have detected any dodgy goings on. Letting the seller know that you have detected his little ruse may give some personal satisfaction but in the end it is only an engine and can be fixed and you will have a better vehicle for it. I have been lucky buying second hand vehicles and asking a few questions about why the vehicle is being sold and getting a feel about how genuine the sale is can help.
I know you feel disappointed now but turn this into an opportunity to make a better car of it. Good luck with the ute and you know there are a lot of good people on this forum wanting to help you.

Hey mooney,
I realise this can be frustrating... How did the lash adjuster "go" to need replacement? I ask this cos if it was just ticking away loudly its normal. My L has normal oil level etc etc and they will randomly tick - cold, op temp, at the lights, throught town or on the freeway at speed...
The water pump and radiator may have only shown problems through different driving styles/needs. Everything has a life expectancy, the previous owner may have known this and sold the problem on to you. Just be glad that you found it before you cooked the engine, then you'd have a real problem...
Heads up, grab the spanner and fix the problems, you'll love it when its running the way you want it.
Cheers
Bennie
