Beach 4wding

anyone else seen last weeks catalyst on abc

The short version is that lifeless looking strip of sand along the beach is far from lifeless, and that tires are crushing the life out.
Wiping out these little guys is environmental destruction on a massive scale… and it’s effect on the fish and bird population is anyone’s guess.
still thats a bit of a long prawn, given how often these same very words are used so often ....
Anyway it is a view that can effect something we can enjoy, so what do you think?

Assoc. Professor Schlacher: On any given day 250 000 cars travel up and down this beach.
You'd be lucky to see that on the highway.

I don't agree bout the traffic of cars and their 'catastrophic' effect, however it was interesting to know... I seriously thought only crabs lived in the sand in certain times of the year. But then again I've never really thought about sand to much.

Interesting, about 160,000 travel over the Sydney Harbour Bridge on a busy day, how many lanes are there on this beach and what is the toll like?

i think i hear the video say "1/4 million on any given year"........
still should that get in the way of a good story of putting a damper on some science.....reporting it to abc's mediawatch ?

What might happen though is that a tourism value will be placed on the beach. Then they can charge for access, earning money to protect it while also limiting the access so that its impact isn't too great. Reality is no one gives a shit about things dying unless its cute or cool, if you want to save an animal or an environment you have to convince people its worth $$$. What they really need is an economist or lawyer making a sales pitch for the bugs in the sand, not some professor who will just come across as another alarmist.
