Assuming it's an automated system (maybe not...)

Any chance of implementing the CAPTCHA technique of re-entering randomly generated alphanumeric codes? This could be done at the user registration only, perhaps. I assume as it's PHP-based it *may* fit into the forum code? See here

Google have some version called recaptcha.

Also, another technique which doesn't put a load on the user is WP Captcha Free, but I don't know this one.

There's no point attacking the actual account or person. It may be simply someone's infected device (hence the round-the-world trip), besides, it validates the location for the spammers by providing them a positive return- this may then be passed on to more sophisticated spammers for account attacks, etc. I don't think we use https (encrypted) here do we? But note the Heartbleed https issue that came out recently...Changed your password to something more secure yet?

I've tried capture and it doesn't work. The spammers must be doing it manually. To register you must answer a question that has a specific answer.

I have set the new user registration to moderate. This means each new user will have to be approved by a moderator before they can post. Can any moderators on the site check to see if you can approve new members. I think I have set it correctly for you to do so.

Let's see how this goes.

Many thanks to the moderators and administrators for doing this. I know it can be an unseen and thankless task. It's a pity you've had to take these steps and impose a greater workload on yourselves.

Again, thanks.

I have had to close registrations to new users temporarily. The spam attack was creating an overload on the servers and they shut us down. I will be looking at ways of getting around this.

If any one wants to join over the next few days then contact us through the facebook The Backyard Boys page and I will manually create the account.

Sorry I misread the 'spam' bit, Thanks for that ... :) ( half asleep )

I wonder if its possible to track the spammers IP - bounce their stuff back at 'em & over load their end ... :p

Cheers, Bantum ...

Lets hope so. From what Brett has said, I think by obtaining registration via FB might help, as this will slow them down.

Hey Brett, will this be permanent way of gaining access to AUSubaru? I think it's not a bad way but I'm sure there is some that don't have FB pages?

Thank god! Felt like I lost a limb for a couple of days :p

Huge thanks to the mods for dealing with this, indeed a tedious behind the scenes job. Seems like the site is almost being purposefully attacked, but why? Not like there's any money to valuable information to be gained...well valuable to anyone but Subaru enthusiasts :o

I'm changing web hosts. It was panic by the current we hosts that shut the site down. If they looked in to it they could see that we had been inundated with spam on our registration page. They simply chose to shut us down instead of helping. It is going to take a while to migrate to a new server. There is about 14 years of backups to download and upload. There is gigs of data to be transferred and it is slow going because of my weak internet service. (Says its adsl but I'm right at the end of the exchanges reach and it's pitifully slow)

The migration should be seamless. If there is down time it will hopefully only be late at night. There is the Facebook page where people can keep up to date should things go wrong.

The registration process for new users will be enabled again once I get things sorted out.
