Hi Guys, I'm about to start my first subi project so I thought i'd post a build log in attempt to add and extract some knowledge to this wonderful subi think tank.
Donor Car: 1991 Subaru Brumby with a "Fun top"

Donor Driveline: 1996 WRX, rear diff and brakes from Liberty RS

Why have I named it 500OBY, well because I picked up some plates for it
Image
Just received a call, my half cut is at the shipping yard ready to be picked up. Will post more pics soon.

P.S if anyone is after any brumby parts, let me know. The entire driveline (except the drive shafts), most of the interior and the engine & cooling system will be being replaced, so they're all up for grabs. If you're in Townsville give me a yell and you can come by and test drive it before I pull it into 1000 pieces.

Well, the half cut is here:

and these arrived as well, to replace the tired standard brumby seats
Image
Test fit to see that they will actually go in there.

They fit like a glove, although the stiffening rib that runs along the floor makes the front of them sit a little high, i'll soon fix that (Properly of course). Lucky I have an mod plate engineer on standby to okay all my handy work :D.

I bought these plates off a bloke from Brissy, i'll be changing the format and colour of them to match the final product once it's on the road but. I'll be giving the whole show a full respray, and was going to stick with the standard white and just strip every unnecessary badge, chrome strip and anything else to give it a clean look (plus it'll have standard 16" WRX wheels). What do you guys reckon? should I stick with the white or go for another colour, keeping in mind that I don't want it to stand out like dogs you know what's, i'd rather it be more of a sleeper, although folks in the know will spot it a mile away.

It would be the same bloke then.

Awesome to see another early model being fitted with a later driveline. I am also completing a similar but into a coupe. Mine maybe a little slower. All the best with it.

If you are going to so much effort doing the conversion you might as well freshen up the paint.

A sleeper with new paint and 16" WRX wheels eh?

Keep the badges  (which are the necessary badges anyway?)

I'm a mechanical engineer myself, although i'm not certified to issue mod plates, but I have a mate who is, he lives down the road from me and is keeping an eye on everything I mod to that he's happy to whack the blue plates on when the show is ready to roll.

Well I got a bit done on it last time I was in town:
I got the old engine and g/box out of the brumby
Image

Then I got stuck into the WRX halfcut
Image
Image
Note: Brand new single plate Exedy Performance clutch, it doesn't look like it's done more then a couple of thousand km's, Score!!!
Here's a comparison of the size of the standard EA81 vs the WRX EJ20, no wonder they're a tight squeeze to get into the brumby.

And a comparison of the Brumby engine bay to the WRX one

I have the WRX engine sitting in the brumby at the moment, will add some pictures later today of where it's fouling the current chassis rails before I cut them up.

Hijack:
It would be the same bloke then.
Does SC9 not have any subes any more? It would be a pity.

Do you need an engineer's certificate to change the seats?

hang on, there are 2 different plates we are thinking of here:
50 OBY and 500 OBY

If you modify the seat mounting points or the seat rails, yes. If it's a straight bolt in affair, then no. I will be getting an engineers certificate because I will need to make new mounts for the seats, as the STi seat rails are wider then the brumby ones, among other differences.

As I stated earlier, I got the WRX engine squeezed into the brumby engine bay to see what sort of trouble i've got myself into, and this is the end result:

Drivers Side

Passenger side

In this position, this is where the engine mounts were sitting, looks like i'm going to have to slot them:

Turbo to Brake master cylinder clearance, or lack there of. Once I get the engine to sit in it's engine mounting holes, this should improve somewhat, but if I need to reposition the turbo a bit i'm not going to lose any sleep, just another excused to fit headers to it while i'm at it.

Going to spend a heap of time on it this afternoon and tomorrow, so should have an update on how it fits soon.
