1997 Outback

Post by jayrod » Tue Dec 10, 2013 5:39 pm

Yo yo

So i bought another subbie... ( i have 4 in the backyard :S )
This time i got an outback, specifically Will's Turbo outback.

Cleaned her up, added my Tyres/New Liberty seats.
Currently running no thermostat just so i can drive it and not overheat :P.
I have another engine i put in just gota find time ( or replace head gaskets ).
Planning on getting KYB Gen 2 forester struts and King Raised springs.

Also need a purple lable turbo AFM ( 3 plug ) if anyone has one ????

Very nice

Can I suggest you put the thermostat back in. The cooling system is designed with it in so the coolant flows at a certain rate through the block. If it flows too fast it wont pick up enough heat which can cause the engine to overheat. If its overheating with it in then it means either the thermostat isnt opening up enough or you need the radiator flushed (or some other fault)

Thermostat not opening, had the issue before.

Unless you get subaru branded, doesnt open.

I might have a AFM you can try out and see if it solves your problem?

As for the thermostat, I'd say you have too much blockage in your radiator if you can run the engine without a thermostat. Thermostats regulate the flow so heat can get out of the engine, flowing too fast through the radiator stops the heat transfer and allows hotter water to circulate back into the engine, thus over heating the engine more.

Yeh was gona take it to a radiator guy in balcatta to give it a flush.
Just gota find the time.

As for AFM, it hasnt actually happened for 2 days now after i took it apart and cleaned it/messed with it.

Though no doubt it will happen again as apparently the purples are the worst ones

I've found most AFM don't like being cleaned but see how you go.

As for the radiator, have a look on fleabay, as usually these are cheaper than getting work done. Just make sure you use Subaru Coolant or the highest quality aftermarket coolant.

Radiator looks quite new, ( doesnt really tell you the insides)

Though when i flushed the system the heater core seemed to be pretty blocked up/ or air locked.

Looks like there's a lot of potential to be had there!

New front and rear bars I reckon are a must for the Outbacks to improve their approach and departure angles!

What else needs to be done, or is it already on the road?

Cheers

Ok Update

Put a gearbox i had out the back in, so we now have a complete set of working gears.
Bought some Forester Gen Struts/Springs second hand today.
Will put those in prob tonight or tomorrow.

Will be getting 1" or 2" strut spacers aswell at some stage.
Aswell as some Raised King springs.

I was going to get KYB new struts, but realized i needed the Tophats/front perch anyway from the Forester, so i decided to just get some second hand ones and save some money.

Also stalling engine has stopped after i cleaned the AFM again with electrical cleaner.
Hasnt stalled in weeks.

Would like Front/Rear bar, but sooooo expensiveeeee!!!!

Update

Put some 2006 forester Struts/springs in.
Possibly raised it about half an inch, but my god is the ride better, the stiffer springs are wayyyy better, and i think my old outback struts were on there way out ( bouncy)

I will Def be getting a 2inch lift + King raised springs at some stage.

Going out to two rocks tomorrow, will see how it handles the hot fine sand.
