History of the Brumby

I found it on Gumtree after searching around Melbourne for a brumby, then searched Victoria and thought "I'll just see what's around Australia" and found a '86 Brumby in Ipswich, Targa roof, 2 inch body lift and 27" tires.

so bought it and arranged transport for it from Ipswich to Melbourne.

Still a good deal

Known issues when buying

The advert stated the front left hub was stuffed, but the car would drive in 4wd.
Dent in the tailgate.
Some electrical problems like indicators, horn and thermo fans.

What I didn't know is (as Bennie pointed out) it's had a replacement engine somewhere along the line, as the original would have had air-conditioning, because the pipe work, fan, etc is all there still but no compressor or bracket that should be holding the compressor in place.

That wont really matter for RWC but down the track at least half of the air con is in the car so chances are I can hook it up again.



Was a very productive day today. After trying yesterday for a couple hours to get it started unsuccessfully, had Bennie drop by to give me a hand.

We got the hub off pretty easily and to our luck, the drive shaft was fine so just had to replace the hub and 2wd will work again.

I charged the battery last night, we had spark in the engine but it wouldn't fire.

Checked the plugs and only one was sparking as it should, so that was the first problem.

Off to the Centre Road wreckers. Found a replacement hub from a crushed car that Bennie remembered was in the external wall of crushed cars was in pretty good nick, so that got us that part. found 3 good spark plugs and a window winder

Not a bad afternoons work.

Got home and put them all into the car and after playing with the timing a little it fired to life.

Bennie found that it's got inconsistent jetting in the primary of the carb. I'll have to chase that down before the Brumby will make it around the block, but for the moment it's running.

Will update this as progression to the RWC and rego

You could always buy a Targa Brumby and shift your parts to that one

Or find a damaged one with a good roof and have it transplanted onto your brumby

Ash, it was great to be a part of this awesome little machine! I hope it all works out for you and that the RWC is an easy process!

I know of a Brumby in a yard that is missing some bits, about the only thing left is a Targa roof ! And a coupla wheel tubs ......

There was a red Brumby with Targa top at Singleton Wreckers in the Hunter Valley NSW.
Dont know if it is still there though as I havent been down that way for a while.

They stemmed from the movie "Human Traffic" and the Junglist Movement t shirt.



Nah not going to be a daily, I have a Yamaha R1 for that.

but will probably take the brumby to work if it's super wet/ cold.

mainly using it for weekending to take the dirt bike out and camping

wee, got my ebay special timing light this morning $40 I figured wasn't the worst investment in the world, and if I can learn how to use it and get the timing right on the little beast will be worth every 5cents (doesn't have the same ring since we stopped using 1 cent coins )

so I'll have a crack at that now I know how to move the dizzy thanks to Bennie's expert tutorage on the weekend.

then tomorrow I'll get into the wiring of the lights and find out why that's all screwy, I'm suspecting broken wire or two, but i'll post up pics as I go along.

then get money together to buy the strut tops and the front end will be nearly sorted

had a play with the timing light after sorting out the front lights and parkers.... turns out all the terminals in the plugs were full of dirt/ ex mud etc.

got the dremel out with the wire brush and took all the spades out and cleaned them up I have working headlights, with high and low beam. and working parkers plus thermo fans work... but not sure about the thermostat switch as I haven't had the car running long enough to get up to that temp.

still no indicators though the lights work, I think that means it's the switch box, that's going to be annoying to replace as from reading up the manual it's all in the indicator switch that has to come off with taking the steering wheel off too.

That's a job for another day.

but had a go with the timing light too, it's idling mostly ok, but still has a miss every so often then gets blow back out the carb (when I had the air filter off) so still have to look at replacing the fuel filter (supercheap didn't have the right one) and then the next would be new plugs.

least a couple of little jobs out of the way till I can get some time and pull the front struts out and get the parts to fix the strut tops

I've got an indicator stalk on an MY touring wagon. By the looks of it this unit *might* be the same as the early L series unit from the "series 1" version that doesn't have the light switch on the stalk.

Let me know about Sunday, I don't know exactly what I'm doing yet - and I've got to sort out some phone credit too I'm keen to get these to you so you've got something to play with

About the fans - have you directly tested them from the battery to determine that they're working?

How far out on the timing was I? Just curious.

woo slack me for not replying to you Bennie.

didn't end up leaving shepp till after 6 Sunday night.

The fans are working I tested them on the battery and then tested the relay and they switch on fine, so just have to get the car to temp to see if the thermo switch works (this was after I cleaned all the contacts as they weren't working before hand when tested)

I took the RHS disk and pads off last night, they didn't look too bad but will get new ones for both sides, safer than not. Having trouble with the left hub nut though, is not backwards thread is it?

but should have them out by this weekend and then the strut rubbers as well. (still need to get money together to buy them from Frog)

I'll pull the s/wheel out and check the stalk as well and take some pics for you to see if your replacement is the same.

That's alright mate! I lucked out on mobile credit then later on the internet - mine and at my parent's place that's having some serious issues... Still not fixed

Anyway, the plug colours, number of wires and if you could wire colour coding - yes a lot of detail but from that I'll be able to give you a definite answer
