Touring Wagon get's reborn

Post by 87rxturbo » Mon Jan 09, 2012 9:53 pm

Thought it was about time i posted some updates of Rx's happenings which lead me to the renewal of this addition to the family here, which is the touring wagon i bought initially for parts. It was found through the usual gumtree/e bay etc scouring awhile ago at a price i couldnt resist. Rebuilt mpfi engine, nice smooth manual box,all electrics working, good power steering,cv's etc, good paint and clean interior (well under the dirt and soggy carpet),but it had no rego,a seized rear wheel bearing and had weeds growing around it and a leaking front windscreen.
First thing was to get the subie on to a tow truck get him home and give him abit of a cleanse to see what i was in for.The old sunnies were clogged with dirt ,weeds n abit of surface rust and the interior although rip n crack free was stinky and had mold growing on the carpet. Here's a cpl of pics how she first arrived ,starting with the e bay pic and then straight off the tow truck 'n quick scrub.

First on the agenda was the wheel bearing,as initially i bought the car as spares for my RX but also for a cheap car for the girlfriend to use while her lancer was defected.
After i pulled off the drum it was found to have the spline completely worn out ,so it was off to U-Pullit and source a replacement.Picked up a new bearing, did abit of reading online on the hows and whys then had a crack myself. Unfortunately i lost the split pin while getting distracted ,so i left it for another day to finish.
To cut a long story short after many little niggly things i got the bearing in but foolishly decided not to replace the inner as it seemed ok,big mistake! Back to wiggle wheels again and decided that Subamods/Subawreck is now having my mechanical business!
After the wheel bearing caper it was decided that after removing the windcreen and cleaning up the surround with a wire wheel, converting the surface rust and priming that i would get the windscreen installed and sealed by a professional, giving me peace of mind and less new grey hairs!

So many options Bennie that i'm not sure which way to roll with it.For now it has just been a general clean up,the last thing i did was sand the crows feet out of the bonnet and had to laugh when under the top coat of white was a nice shiny red that matches the RX !Bearing in mind it was initially purchased as a parts car for the RX,however i got abit carried away and sprayed it in black satin acrylic, just to see how it would look to tie in with the black touring stickers, black and chrome H pattern wheels etc.Personally i really like the look (no pics at this stage).
Some of the options are: i have a nice set of black mesh 15" rims with brand new Cooper 205 ATR's ( which will mean i will need some lift and 6 stud conversion). I also have a nice pair of brand new black Saas seats (mind you the blue interior of mine is pretty mint if you can handle the colour!) and i was also thinking of coil over shocks at 1 stage (just the cheap inserts) to give me some adjustablity in height should i not go with a lift and Coopers and putting some 195/50's on it. Thinking black bonnet, black mesh wheels,195's would look pretty cool for around towning.

Was bored the other day ,so decided to wheel the dusty parts mobile out of the shed.Lately the RX has been getting hot when i've been giving it abit of stick so may have to borrow some bits off of the wagon,eg radiator depending on what is the problem. Thinking of buying some black JDM bolt on flares, kinda like the SLR 5000 style and trying them out on the wagon to wrap around the nissan wheels. Should look pretty cool i think.

Cheers, the wheels n tyres came off a Nissan Elgrand, but if i don't end up lifting it the tyres may have to go. I scored some new 185/15 low profiles for the time being. Anyone need some almost new Cooper ATR's in 205/70/15?

How much for the tyres? Do they come with 15" rims by chance? That fit a brumby?

White touring wagon ye ye! I think i'm going to have to do the same with mine, a few rust spots are rearing their ugly heads :(. Plus, the seal that they replace the OEM one with looks so much cleaner!

I want $400 for the rims and tyres,or $200 for just the tyres, bearing in mind i'm in SA if you want them. The rims are 6 stud so will only fit if youve done the hub conversion.
