Just went and picked up a White Brumby Ute 1990 MV from Muswellbrook NSW.
Now starts the work to fix what needs fixing and a big clean.

I am from Muswellbrook, where did you get it from, private sale or dealer.
Havent noticed any Brumbies or any Subaru's for sale in the area for a long time.
I only ended up with my L series as I asked a bloke I know if he was interested in selling it.
Turns out he was but other things had taken priority and did not sell it earlier.

Yes word of mouth works well had purchased a 4runner of him for the stepson he needed a motor after teaching it to swim didn't work he mentioned have a ute for sale as well.

looks like its the third motor that has been in it 399k on the speedo

motor didn't have a distributor on it have picked up one but looks like i will have to modify it to fit plus the plugs are different

Not sure where you are from but most wreckers have a selection of various sorts of Brumby's.

Thanks just made a list of what i need and what i would like. the need list is just bits that are broken or missing like the keys (lost) broken driver side indicator light both guard and front and one hinge only on the tail gate.

The main concern i have is the distributor looking at the engine its a ea81 got know idea what model its from ????

Ahhh Toronto.
I come from Warners Bay and served my apprenticeship at Wangi Power Station starting in 1979.
Lake Macquarie will always be special to me and my parents still live in the Bay. (weather depending I may be going to see them tomorrow)
Re the engine, if you can positively ID it as a 90 model EA81 I used to stick to same year cars at the wrechers, ie, find a 90 model MY anything (wagon/sedan/Brumby) and see what it has fitted for a distributor. Being a 90 model you should be looking at electronic ignition. My 82 MY Wagon has points and I was constantly going though vacuum advance modules.
From memory you should have have a wreckers at Rathmines, Toronto, and areas such as Cardiff. Also Cardiff Subaru wreckers are a great source of knowledge. They are up from the Workers Club (Munibung road - Spelling !!)
Sorry if I am not making any sense I have had very little sleep as I was at the Elton John concert at Hope Estate last night and 3 hours sleep does not seem to be enough.

Problem with this is that in 1990 the ONLY MY model being produced was the brumby... The L series distributor can be made to fit, I'm sure someone on here has done it before so try doing a search, otherwise check out USMB and check it out there. I believe that you need to swap the cam follower gear on the bottom of the dizzy, but I'm not 100% sure as I've only read about it when I was considering doing it to Sunnie the Brumby - turned out to be an electronic module in the dizzy causing my issues.

Other than the gearbox (some fabrication needed, do a search), rear diff (direct drop in) and not much more than this, the L series is useless for parts...

Will you be removing the dings in the tailgate? Might take quite a bit of effort though but would be worth it in the end.

She's had a good 'workin' life

The dizzy will be the electronic type but you can convert to points if you can't find an electronic one. If you go the points way, just make sure you use the points coil and resistor.

I may have some spares (both types) over here in WA if you have no luck in the East.

Otherwise there is always Fleabay...

I found a distributor the accountant came good (wife) with the money to purchase one. ended up getting the points one so what's the points coil look like or type and resistor is the white ceramic block ?

That's the plan Bennie unless i find another one with the chrome strip on it i also need a hinge, one is missing or make one up from looking at the one on it

The coils look the same, just the electronic one is marked 'electronic' so try and find one that is not marked (you could even get one off another model car) and yes the resistor is that large white block normally attached to the coil. You'll need this resistor to stop the points from burning out. There should be a wreckers around somewhere close that will have this stuff.

BTW.. got to love those 'accountants' hehe

Reduced visibility through the rear window and low objects when reversing is usually the reason - the other one is that when you drop the tail gate with a trailer attached you will put a good ding in it from the top of the trailer's hitch...

Alan, if it really comes down to it, I've read that you can use the EA82 dizzy, but I think the cam following gear needs to be swapped to the EA81 unit on the bottom of the EA82 dizzy. The rest pretty much drops right in place. I almost did this to Sunnie the Brumby a month ago, but he came good with a new module in the dizzy

ok going to chase up a gt40 coil with ballast. ive got a electronic distributor and the cam gear is different started shaving the casing inside and was rubbing on the plastic bits in side under the cap.

the tail gate should be repairable the dints are all over it but it did live on a farm and you expect that from throwing stuff over the side
