Slap yourself on the back for nutting it out on your own Jules. These must have been part of the conversion electricals ? I think 99.9% of us are guilty of not updating a handbook on conversion, so zip to refer to when chasing ghouls and demons. Though, my Brumbys are starting to read like those dodgy aftermarket parts books that reckon any Brumby after 1985 has a timing belt kit and other EA82 stuff
I used to part #'s on underside of bonnet.
Have you seen those fuses that supposedly light up a built in LED ? when they blow ? Jaycar had them at twice price of a std blade fuse. Still be no good inside a dark fuse holder
Did the fuse break or blow ? Chasing cause or leave that until next time ?

Yeah ... I went back in this thread and found I posted first about this problem on the 19th of October. in hindsight I wish I had checked them first it would've been a lot cheaper
Mind you I now have :
a new timing kit
The coolant temp sender (new)
the knock sensor (new)
the crank angle sensor (working second hand unit)
the cam angle sensor (working second hand unit)
the igniter (working second hand unit)
the coil pack (working second hand unit)
the afm (working second hand unit)
the O2 sensor (working second hand unit) (new one coming from THE USA)
the ECU (working second hand unit) ( I have 3 different years to choose from )
ALL with spares (apart from the timing kit)
If I was really worried I suppose I could get another TPS as well
I wonder what other fuses I can find under there today

Yeah rather annoying in the end but hey I now have spares for all the electrics apart from the TPSEl_Freddo wrote:Well that turned out to be a "cheap fix" then..!
Of all the things a fuse or two. Good to know those rubber seal fuse holders aren't so good and that I've got my fuses in a little panel behind the glove box
I take it Jetcar is still motoring along now? Just asking
Cheers
Bennie
I think that when I went from the standard Subaru EFI pump to an AFTER market Ebay job the higher fuel pump PSI meant a bigger pump motor which made for way more draw on the electronics. and the extra heat made the little rubber covers fuse cookers.
I gave a V8 ford a run for its money the other morning, I think he was in shock that this noisy old subaru just dissapeared away from him at the lights.
He ended roaring past me once I got to the speed limit he didn't look very happy at all.

Slap? I thing more of a pat would be better :Psteptoe wrote:Slap yourself on the back for nutting it out on your own Jules.
Yeah they were but with the standard pump, they are fine. I've got them in many conversions and still going strong.steptoe wrote:These must have been part of the conversion electricals ?
No, they didn't blow otherwise we could have found it earlier.. no power to fuel pump would have been a dead give away.steptoe wrote:Did the fuse break or blow ? Chasing cause or leave that until next time ?
Cause is the power draw of the aftermarket HP pump which draws more than the EA82 EFI pump. Plus the wire isn't melted, just the holders, so this tells me the connection joints between the connector and the fuse aren't suited for the aftermarket pump.
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

I have a question for the other vortex owners on the board.
Remembering my vortex is an 87-88 built model so I'm pretty sure it may have the pre 88 harness. as well It no longer has the factory boat anchor under the bonnet.
Picture a coldish winter morning 1-3 degrees celcius and the windscreen is wet but it isn't raining. You use the wiper stalk with the window washer on the steering column to clear the wet windscreen.
the wiper works it does the required sweeps and then the annoying little hidden @#$%^&* RELAY from the sound in the passenger side of the dash goes crazy and clicks like a drunk cricket. The only way I can stop the wipers is if I use the intermittent function on the wiper controls.
WHERE is that @#$%^&* RELAY!!!!!
I have 4 in the space behind where the radio once lived (it wasn't in the broken dash mounting when I got the car) and I've replaced all of them with good working original subaru relays is it one of them or like the brumby is there one stuffed behind something that needs most of the dash removed to get at it.
The FSM I have is American and for the 89 model. the wiring diagram and trouble shooting guide refers to a computer module that works with the speed sensor I know I don't have that computer module as I have a sliding rheostat (yep a rheostat) that controls the wiper speed.
WHERE is that @#$%^&* RELAY!!!!!
If I need to replace it HOW MANY PINS DOES that @#$%^&* RELAY HAVE!!!!!

What year?Nubaru wrote:wiper INT relay in a diagram for older EA82 stuff, looks like Vortex dash calls it i25 , is blue and 13 pole plug, right dang smack central behind radio above the hump and must be near the four relays ?
Got a diagram? either electrical wiring or where in the dash.
The 4 relays are below the radio just above the hump.
It would be much appreciated.

look for a poo brown box (unless you eat too much licorice) ...imagine a pack of 30 fags .... chop the top 1/3 off and that is the size of cricket you are looking for and from memory is a double screwed bracket and is in the middle near those relays on the earlier XT's so it is possible yours is hidden down behind left rear side pocket

So I found it thanks for the info Nubaru
I had to remove the passenger seat to get to the screw on that side as it wouldn't budge... so much fun.
mine is a pooish blue colour with 17 pins
One of the 3 relays inside is unhappy. The relay cover is heat deformed which I guess means it has had a hard life and the blue plastic the module is housed in seems to be from the same batch that was used to make the self-destructing dash surrounds
The only replacement I can find it for a later model SVX with the same pin configuration but as it is in America the postage is twice the cost of the part
Does anyone have one they want to sell.
Mine appears to be repairable but I don't even know if I could still get the replacement relay and it could be that one of the 2 microprocessors is faulty as well.

Dry Joints ...
Probably suffering from 'dry joints' - I'd take it apart & resolder them ...
And while you have it apart, check the relays for correct movement & corrosion.

Had it apart the relays are non serviceable items and when I did an ebay search on the relay I got zip. As for the "dry joints" that was my first thought, but after inspecting the whole "subaru made" "NEC ? perhaps" PCB all I found was the shrinkage on the faulty relay. That was when I found out the blue plastic box was made of the same crap plastic as the dash surround.Bantum wrote:Probably suffering from 'dry joints' - I'd take it apart & resolder them ...

Yeah one wiper arm that occasionally keeps going and all I can hear in the background is a ticking...steptoe wrote:sheesh ! All that for one wiper arm !

Relay Internals ...
Have you got any internal shots of this apart ?
You might be able to find a replacement relay that does the same job, just wont look the same.

that would be the bean counters ensuring the plastics did not go to waste. Colour matched component boxes . Best stuff for dicky wipers for me has been Rain-X - frequent applications.
Could you run or subydoug run wires from PCB to external to hook up to any relay you desire to make it all work again ?

Yeah I looked on ebay and couldn't find what I was looking for I may have to pay Jaycar a visit on the weekend.Bantum wrote:Have you got any internal shots of this apart ?

I could probably do it rather quickly but I don't want to have a no wiper vortex if the "fix" doesn't "fix"steptoe wrote:that would be the bean counters ensuring the plastics did not go to waste. Thats why I want another unit.
There is this on in the USA but postage is a bummer

Jono who do you know on your side of the island with a "parts" vortex
