The Rear Wheel Carrier Thread

Ok, so I'm looking at carrying a spare on the back of my Lib...
I'd prefer putting one on the back, then throwing one up on the roof, as I don't like the look of it, don't warm to the idea of throwing one up there and use my roof for other things
I've got a mate who can dab a welder very well. But before we start planning on doing this, I'd absolutely love some ideas/opinions!
What to do and what not to do's.
Why have a swing arm over an arm that folds down (and vice versa).
Legalities of it all...
PICS are most welcome, as are personal DIY write ups in this thread!
I know most are probably on the Ls and MYs, but this doesn't matter, all are welcome.

have a look at the carriers on the big 4x4 rigs too.. plenty of them are home made, take plenty of pictures too (if the owners dont mind) lots of different ideas on locking machanisms, and swing arm bearings etc etc
I did this for my 60 series cruiser, and it turned out pretty good! although i am looking at changing it a bit now!

I put a gas tailgate strut on mine to hold it in the correct position when open, nothing worse than trying to load/unload and hold the wheel, especially on a slope.
Have fun, there are many options.

love to know how you end up doing this. I need to sort out my lib at some stage.
I had planned to weld mine onto my towbar as it runs inside the rar bar across the width of the vehicle. Will require a fair amount of chopping up your rear bumper skin but im sure it can be done tastefully.

Dane, you should be able to do it in a similar way to how I did my old L one, I had a piece of 8mm flat bar bolted to the chassis rail which came straight out through the plastic bumper. Done with a dremel it would look great, even factory! (I did it by heating up the flat bar and pushing the hot end through the plastic - even this way it looked pretty good!)
Could always go for a 'Tuff Truck' style tube bar - I think this is how I'll achieve what I want for the brumby

as requested. mine was avidler made bar i bought off lapsed when he wrecked his wagon, bout the start of this year.
and no im not bogged - was parked at the bottom of a dune.
also here is alex's (used to be Suba's). i took photos to copy bits of the design

mine is still to be modified as it was originally for a MY...i like the bottom bit tho...protects my cannon abit :P and doesnt slow me down thru the sand, it just cuts thru the sand.

Just thought i would add the pic of my rear bar / Tyre carrier. The second carrier is not installed yet..... Just got to get it back from the coaters.....

I'd like to make my own one of these too. Where would be a good place to look for the pivot point and locking mechanism?
Seems to be quite an expensive prospect to buy a complete wheel carrier from a donor 4x4 and modify it, so I'd like to try and make one from scratch.

The bar I built is totally from scratch. There have been some ridiculous number of hours put in to the design & fabrication of it.
But its worth it!!!
I am using a trailer axle & hub as the pivot point & carrier hub.
As for locks have a look at ute tray latches..
