235/75R15 tyres

Post by stripeyone » Thu Dec 30, 2010 6:23 pm

what do i need to do to get this size to fit my 98 outback if possible as its the smallest in the cooper stt 28.9 inches diameter they will be mounted on the factory 15 inch rims well i beleive thats what size they are

edit. found that a factory outback tyre is 205/70R15 which is 26.3" diameter the 235/75R15 tyre has a 28.9 " diameter a total increase of 2.6" in diameter, which in my theory is only 1.3 inches of extra tyre to foul up on anything as 1.3 " on both top and bottom of tyre is 2.6" and only 3cm wider in width

I think you will be doing some grinding off the guards in your outbacks case taking some of the plastic trim that goes in the guard to.
You will have some issues on full lock rubbing i think.
Most of all you mightn't get the tyres under the struts
I have got 215/75/15 on my Liberty with Outback struts the tyres only just clear the the struts.
This is only some things to think about i wouldn't outlay the money until you know they will fit.

Just had a look currently running a 225/40R18 tyre front I have about 40mm to work with before I get too close to the strut and the rear I have 30mm

You will have rubbing issues unless guard cutting and place spacers which is illegal. Also your speedo will be out.

would fitting rims with more/less offset stop rubbing on anything like inner guard, chassis or the like.then body lift to cure guard clearance??

I fitted the whiteline anti-lift kit to my Gen2, which increases the caster by about .5 degrees. It pushes the wheels out and forward a little bit, but it was enough to stop my 215/65/16's from rubbing on the chassis and i now have full lock again. 235's will only be about .5" larger in radius so the should fit, but been wider you may have more problems with rubbing on the chassis area.

You could always see if a tyre shop will test fit some up for you, best way to know if they will work or not.

Edit: i have 2" lift in my car so may be different for you.

It's not just when the car is on level ground, when you car is twisting and lifting wheels the wheel will move from front to back.
I had a thin mud flap on the back it had plenty of room when on level ground but when you had some flex the tyre rubbed it now has a hole in it.

You will need a 3 inch lift and will still have rubbing issues. I had 28's (215/70/16) on a 3 inch lifted Gen 2 which just rubbed on the rear chassis rail. I suspect the 235's will be very close to rubbing on the bottom of the spring plate of the rear strut. There are plenty of good tyres in the 28 inch size as they are a standard size for many light 4wds. I have BFG AT's and they have been excellent.

ill have a look at some smaller tyres, do the bfg at's work good when out playing other day i came to a complete stop when i found mud so that cut the enjoyment out of the drive when i had to turn around and go back , plans are for 2 inch body and 1 inch suspension, was going to look at coilovers to avoid clearence issues ud have with a strut but the price of them factors that out and the fact they have adjustments on top that would get in the way of spacing the top

Another problem you will encounter is that I'm pretty sure you will have some issues at the tyre places as most will refuse to fit tyres that aren't factory specified for the car.
