215/70/16 BFG AT's on gen 3 outback???

Hi all looking for some new tyers for my standard 01 outback. It has 215/60/16 on it atm but i would like somthing more off road. Problem is they dont have 215/60/16 and was wondering if any one has fitted the 70 series on standard rims with no lift and if they fit. Also how much the affected acceleration and speedo calibration? Thanks for any help or suggestions.:)

I'm pretty sure you will end up rubbing on the suspension strut... I'm not 100% sure.
But you might as well get a narrow tyre ie. 205/70 16"?

they will fit but you will need a 2in body lift!1

As AP said, maybe try in 205/70/16 instead of 215/70/16... Ask them to test fit one front wheel and see if you get rub?

They won't rub on the strut.They will rub on the trim without a lift.
215/70 16 with a 2" lift

Just remembered seeing a gen3 with the tyres you mentioned.It wasn't lifted but it had the guards trimmed

I have the same tyres on my standard Gen 3 OB,they only rub at the back on full compression with a heavy load in the car and then only just. I am about to fit raised king springs which should eliminate this. They will put the speedo out by around 10%, but are a great tyre on gravel.

I ran that size on outback struts with raised kings - only really had rub on the strut, nowhere else. Can't speak for how they'll fit without a lift, sorry.

As to the tires themselves - they're awesome! I had them on the lib before I wrote him off, RIP Scoobs. Absolutely great, couldn't have been happier with the BFG AT - great in mud and on rocks/sand for an AT tire I was surprised as to how well they go in the muck. On gravel they feel superb and stick extremely well.

Note if you go with the HD springs - if you plan on going anywhere near rutted roads be sure to have enough weight in the car to preload the springs, else you might end up like I did (see sig pic).

Oh, and they're pretty noisy compared to AT-R type tires - nothing like muddies but you can certainly hear them without the stero on.

Go to bobjane.com.au and do a search for the tyre of your size. The search turned up 23 tyres in the size 215/60/16, and one of them is All-Terrain, Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S.

Thanks for all the replies everyone:D just wondering the guys that have run the 215/70/16 as well as the speedo being out, how much performance on take off acceleration was lost???

Hi legacytt when you say they rub at the back do you mean the back of the front tyre or the rear tyre?

If you have 3.7 diffs they're bad enough with the stock wheel size. If they're 3.9 it won't be too bad - my lib originally had 14" rims and 3.9 diffs - I went to the size you are after and it wasn't too bad. My outback has 3.7 diffs and standard wheels and if it wasn't for the bigger engine it'd accelerate like pooh - its bad enough as it is... but that'll change soon as my gearbox and diff project is coming good.

Check the label on your rear diff, if its 3.7 then hmmmmmm maybe, but if its 3.9 its not too bad - you can always use low range and it'll go faster :mrgreen:. I'll be running 215/70/16 for the snow trip coming up as they are the rims I have with the more aggressive tires.

Only the rear tyres rub and only on the trim inside the guard when the suspension is fully compresses so no drama.

Ok cool what about acceleration ect much of a difference? any other down sides to the bigger tyers? im just trying to see if it is worth while going this way, cant quite decide yet?????

Hate to revive a dead thread but do any of you think this holds true on USDM cars? I've a 2002 OBW with 2 lift and am fighting between 215/70/16 or 215/65/16. My final drive ratio is 4.11 (4eat) so i don't see problems with getting the car moving, with the added 8 pounds of tire or so. It's just looking at that space by the strut top with my KYB GR-2s and just finding it very hard to believe i can fit 1.4" more tire in that gap with my 16" Premium gold alloys with the 48mm offset (was considering getting some steelies with 38mm offset in hope that might help a little with the strut rub). So do you think it's only you lucky folk down under that can run the 70, or can anyone anywhere. If the GR2s are the same strut sold world-wide (i imagine they are) so the perch would be the same position world-wide then (i envy you down under with your nudge and bull bars but no way can afford one with importation to the US).
If my car get lifted higher, i'm welding tubes to the bottom of the front struts and raising that dang perch in that process, lifting the car at the same time. That might happen once this 2002 gets a little more beat up and isn't a DD.
