should i 6 stud?
hey valued forum members,
my super trippers are running low on tread and ill be looking at new tyres in the next month or so.
i quite like the look of 14s- makes an L series look normal, but im toying with the idea of doing the 6stud conversion. so im after opinions from those that have done it- in particular how have you found them offroad in the sand? do you think they look way too big for an L? any other pros/cons.not overly concerned with the 1" extra clearance of the 15"'s.
obvious the price it a valuable factor too. seems you can do this conversion for about $200ish provided you find a good set of wheels from the quokka.
was also thinking 14" BFG's could be nice. Lenny's omes would be even better
what do ya think?

15" doesnt necessarily mean more lift matt
u can get tyres for ur 15"s with the same outside diameter as your current super tripper, but being 15's theres a lot more options....guys like mat and alex did them caus they just so happen to be the tyres that came with the rims...getting smaller tyres then that is easy to do

matt, you know my opinion. one of the best mods ive ever done to wanky. The crawl factor is unbelievable. The just keep rolling thru the soft stuff.(in regards to 29s)
i will be mving down to 28s when these tyres are shagged tho.
it worth it IMHO. do it, you wont look back...EVER!

I don't think many board members have done a 6 stud conversion. Maybe half a dozen. Do you want opinions from those that havn't?Subafury wrote:...im after opinions from those that have done it...not overly concerned with the 1" extra clearance of the 15"'s.
Changing to 15" rims in any stud pattern is going to do nothing to your ground clearence.
Let me ask the only pertinant question; what size tyres would you like to run? Choice or rim, offset, lift etc comes after that.
WOW. Changing to 6 stud rims did all that?Keffa wrote:matt, you know my opinion. one of the best mods ive ever done to wanky. The crawl factor is unbelievable. The just keep rolling thru the soft stuff.(in regards to 29s)

What sort of price would the rims be? if we can find the need for 40?Outback bloke wrote:How soon do you want to do it? We can still get the brand new 15 inch wheels. Other styles to the sunny look to. Only prob is you have to find other people that want them to make the order up to 40 wheels.
would definately try keep the four stud but move to a 15" rim.
Please forgive the minor hijack, are there any links to info on how to do this? If it involves redrilling the hubs I doubt any engineer would sign off on it.
Back to regular programming. To a certain extent more studs mean more strength. Some things you need to think about are:
What tyres would you use?
Are you going to be doing anything that would cause so much stress on the hubs that you need 6 studs for?
Is it just for the Bling factor?
Spares would not be a problem, neither would offsets simply because so many medium and large 4wds use them. You could virtually pick from a wide range of both rims and tyres.
Personally I like the idea of 6 stud hubs but then again my main car is a brand that uses them.

its not that much work. bit of drilling and some grinding. car has already been defected once. i doubt any copper or pit inspector would even know a suby is sposed to have 4 studs, ie could just say theyre bigger wheels. so not converned with thee legalities of it.Matatak wrote:i say BFG's.
the 6 stud requires alot of work really.
altho it looks good i wouldnt do it unless you didnt care if your car gets defected
(ps. why do you always screw up posting links)
it will give more clearance because if im gonna do this i might as well get the biggest tyre size possible, which is 28-29". so its not just for bling.
a 15" 4 stud rim would be nice but i dont have the funds for it. trying to limit amount spent on the car. and like i said the 6 stud would cost $200-300 if I can find the right wheels. compared to like $500+ for new 27" 4x4 tyres.
just wondering....how many of the people who voted for 14" have any experience with 6stud L series with larger than 14" wheels?
I know Keffa has...and he voted for doing it

Admitedly not a 6 stud conversion - but have had experience with 29" tyres on 15" rims. Gearing was up the creek IMOAndrewT wrote:just wondering....how many of the people who voted for 14" have any experience with 6stud L series with larger than 14" wheels?
Apolgoies for not paying more attention to the 6 stud part.

Going from 27 to 29 inch tyre's increases the speed by ~7% so at an old 10km/h you'll be doing a new 10.7km/h...vincentvega wrote:explain how fitting 29" tyres helps you "Crawl" ???
So 5km/h -> 5.35km/h
Not exactly a massive jump...
Plus if you let the tyres down this shortens the Radius to the ground making the gearing shorter. and with the extra floatation less effort would be required to turn the tyres allowing you to crawl along were you may have had to use some more revs/power/speed.
There is more tread in contact with the ground also. me and Alex are both running 235/75 R15's.vincentvega wrote:explain how fitting 29" tyres helps you "Crawl" ???
thats ALOT more tread in contact in regards to an Lseries or MY compared to the 14's which 'claim' to be a 27" x 8.5"
Have you seen how much ive mutilated my car ?Subafury wrote:i want to know more about matataks resons for voting 14s
