the link for the tent you put up, i have seen one very similar on a forester also and they seem to work well. although i dont have personal experience with the pop up style.
mine is also more then roomy enough for two.

mmmm i like the idea of the pop-up style, i should just go test fit it its only 1.5 hours drive from me...if my car sells i can put it on my next one:)

the pop up tents are also cheaper! mine was a $1000 from ebay more then double from ARB!
i like mine better only because there is more room to get dressed in tent but you have to use it regularly to get your monies worth.
i would also imagine that the popup tent would fold up smaller and weigh less which is a positive especially on longer trips

Our pop top (clam shell design) roof top camper weighs about 55kg without any gear in it. I find it to be about a foot too short for me but can live with it. If I ever get my A into G I'd build another one along the same lines but with that extra length built into it. Other than that I reckon it's pretty awesome for a starter roof top tent, plus it fits the L series really well, something I didn't think about when I made the purchase!

If you can go and fit it up have a crack at it. Also do a test fit for yourself to make sure it's long enough etc...

Of course I'm going to modify mine - some vents and some lighting/power will be on the cards very shortly!

I got it on fleabay, was hoping for $1000. Got played around a little and ended up paying the $1200 they originally wanted. I'm happy though.

I found this on fleabay - Dunno about the colour but a couple of spray cans should be able to sort that out

for the same price i would have mine, doesnt take long to set up and is huge on the inside.
also the shape of the tent allows a large amount of air flow when both doors and windows are open

got the roof top tent on roof racks and on the new SG forester today in preperation for our 2 week tassie trip in december

still have to do the awning but need to mod the brackets first. also broke the zip

so another thing to add to the list of things to do before we go

Just wondering what you ended up using for roof racks ?
I dont see the Subaru ROLA racks cutting it even if there were 4 of them on the roof.

I think you're after what Thunder used, my camper is the clam shell type. I've mounted it with four aftermarket roof racks, two are Thule, I can't remember what the other two are. I only do that for weight bearing just to be safe - if I'm not going to sleep in it - eg, if I'm only transporting it on the roof I'll use two racks to save time.

i used the thule aero bars. they have a 75kgs rating each, but that rating is the movement weight rating. when car is not moving they are about 120kgs???
i think stilson uses the same....

I didnt consider the moving vs stationary factor either.

no problems. if i were to do it over again i would use standard shape square roof racks such as rhino as the awning brackets dont fit into my thule aero bars
