L-series header advice

gday all
my 3inch liftkit is finally in!...we had some minor problems with the tailshaft rubbing on my exhaust, it just needs some cutting/re-welding etc etc...
to the question, im thinking of getting some catless headers and when they re-do my exhaust just get them to shove the new headers in...
is this a wise option? can i expect more power? fuel economy? any other pros/cons?
by the way...its a 1990 L-series sportswagon, and i currently have a 2.5inch cat-back sports exhaust
cheers

I have heard mixed reports about the benefits of removing the Cat... some have said the power increase is noticable... similar to that noticed when air con is ON compared to air con OFF.
Some say it makes no difference and it is simply a polution control device. I on the other hand have never actually had one in any of my subies. EA81 never had em and my ej22 had no space for the Cat so it was removed.

Don't know how strict its policed over your way, but make sure you realise the legalities, or lack of, by not running a cat.
legalities aside, i ran catless headers when I had my L. It made a difference. Difference to power (having said that, my headers were shot anyways, with leaking flanges.) It'll make a difference to your wallet. $200 vs $700 for catless vs catted headers.
I would do the exhaust. makes for a good grounds for power increase.
you said that you had 2.5"? I think that's an excessive size for a 1.8. You would even get a better power increase if you were to drop to 2", some would say 2.25". This is because the motor does require some backpressure, for improved combustion.

He's thinking ahead smoov, the exhaust is all ready for a turbo to be bolted on!
