What Exhausts system for my EJ25??

Post by guyph_01 » Wed Aug 17, 2011 10:27 pm

Hi guys,

Well i'm gonna get a new exhaust system made for the car one that will be well tucked in under and hang as little as possible.

With the old EJ22 i had second hand extractors that i got for free. Std Lib mid section, 2 inch pipe and a rear canon. Car had a great note but was a tad too loud heard from inside.

I would like to now what you guys think would be the best size pipe to use but also what can i do to reduce the cabin noise?

I would also like to keep the from extractors and the rear canon.

Should i stay with 2 inch pipe or go 2 1/2inch?
Would a resonator / hotdog thing help?
Should i include a flex joint in it or would that end up failing?

Thx for the help:)

2.25 or 2.5" with high flow muffler (not a bloody farter cannon or milo tin!!)

quiet, sounds good, and minimal cabin noise

davo
no more subarus

Ditch the cannon is priority, try that & if it is still loud add a resonator.

Or find a STi muffler (not the Genome one) off a GD STi...sounds perfect & not overly restrictive. Will be an issue with the L Series floor pan though unless you cut in a long tip. Even then the muffler body might be too big.
Cheers,
Andrew

Why is the canon not good? Does it restrict or something?

They're sh!t to put it short and bluntly!

1) they're shiny to attract the racer boy
2) they're produced for those who think they know about their car's needs
3) they're useless bling - no matter what Alex tells you.

I've got the factory Y pipe and cat on my EJ22, after that is a 2 1/4 inch system with flexli joint then resonator (looking at something a little more streamline than the box I've got now) and a rear muffler that sounds good and isn't droning away at cruise. All tucked up nice and neatly. Very happy with it.

Venom should have something to add too - he's got a system up for sale that would do the job well with an extra bend or two added to it to tuck it up neatly under the subi with the lift...

Cheers

Same as talking through a traffic cone, just makes it louder with no baffling to 'soften' the noise. They are usually made from a cheap material or thin walls which gives it a crap sound.

Sorry KPM inc. but cannons are for ricers and bogans, do you fit into those categories? :)

If you have the factory headers/exhaust/ cat for your engine. leave them on as they were designed by people who know what they are doing.

from the headers/exhaust/cat go either 2 and a quarter or 2 and a half inch straight through to a standard subaru turbo muffler your engine will be free flowing and rev like buggery.

otherwise get a set of borla headers, no cat, no resonator and run a 2 and a half inch pipe out the back into a cannon with a four inch tip, the red sticker will be worth the noise it makes for the few days it is on the road :)

or get a similar setup to a set of borlas, run a 2 and a half inch pipe with a small resonator in the middle out to a hot dog a nice note and not overly loud.

my brumby has a similar setup to the last option but a cat with a 2 and a quarter inch inlet and outlet instead of the resonator going nearly straight back to a v8 turbo muffler from a commode. after this weekend I will have my subaru turbo muffler back on to quieten it down completely.

There are 3 or 4 threads floating on the internet in various forums about the best system for a 2.5 NA exhaust, all have the same conclusion. Take your pick of 2.25 or 2.5" pipe, get a good quality high flow cat (probably the most expensive part of the system), a straight through oval muffler (good quality will sound better) and add a hot dog in there somewhere. If that system is too loud, then change the muffler to a non-straight through oval.

Canons on NA cars are for P platers with hyandai excels that have a full body kit thats beat to shit and a surfboard or mechano rear wing.

you will have .25 of an inch higher exhaust system as opposed to the 2.5inch exhaust hence it not hanging as low :)

cannons sound the best. Sure theyre a rice stick but nothing sounds as good

i ran a 2.5inch cat-back system to a moderately large hotdog muffler in the middle to a very small cannon (it was quite an expensive cannon also)

Never heard a ej22 sound as good EVER. (sounded better than a rex imho) it made cool watery sounds. bloop bloop bloop bloop hard to describe, but it got every subaru enthusiast i know pants' wet. I ran a highflow sports rear muffler before that, it sounded good, but not as good.

When i went to ej20g the thing sounded mental. Theres something about subaru turbos that just sound so much better than their n/a counterparts.

Hehehe... you NEVER fail us do you Alex?!

You forgot to mention that it's also shiny :p

An oval rear muffler will be better for clearance over a cannon in general...
