I know there is plenty of threads on this subject but bare with me. Today i was looking under my brumby when i realised it actually has a 2 inch pipe after the headers, down to just before the rear muffler when it goes down to about 1.75 inch with a long hotdog. I was wondering if I put a cannon on the end of the 2 inch pipe will it make it sound like a wrx?

Makes it sound awesome as most boxers do but yeah not quite like a rex in my opinion.

I'd stay with 2" all the way, straight through with 2" tip, sound nicer than a canon imho. when you take it for a rego check the mechanic won't laugh behind your back at your canon either... each to their own though.

Not exactly like a rex but most people that don't know much about subies won't be able to tell the difference.
I got it done to mine from a place called Streamline Exhaust (mainly because I didn't have a welder etc etc).
I got a 2" straight pipe to the back (No catalytic converter, EPA laws are almost non existent in SA) with a stainless steel cannon for $180 installed.
Worth every penny, the car sounds mean now.

well I don't mean specifically like a wrx, just that nice suby rumble that you hear on foresters, wrx, liberty etc. I understand it will sound a bit different due to the different engine.

so if I get rid of the 1.75 inch pipe and oval muffler at the back and replace it with 2 inch pipe and a cannon it will sound a lot better?

You could put a 3" oval, straight through muffler on in place of the cannon and get similar results, without the wankyness of a cannon.
Remember that the shorter the tailpipe after the muffler, the deeper the note

This is a quote from the sticky thread about easy ea81 performance enhancements. nobody replied so I'm posting it here.

my brumby has what you mentioned with a 2 inch pipe but has a 1.75 inch pipe just before the rear muffler and what i'm guessing is a stock oval muffler. Which is better in terms or performance, sound and cost, a 5 inch cannon tip or a straight through/high flow muffler?
thanks

does the size of the cannon make any difference? for example the bigger the louder etc?

Usually the bigger, the deeper the sound

bigger cannon and pipe that it is attached to the louder the noise.
e.g. i run a 3" system on my rex including dump pipe with a 4" oval muffler and its pretty loud so i am told. and its a top quality Butler exhaust system, not cheap
If i changed it from the diff back and bolted on a 2.5" pipe with a 3" oval muffler it would be quieter, maybe little power loss.
But with an N/A car power really doesnt come into play with exhaust.
I had a cannon on my old L series from diff back, embarrasingly loud, was about 4"
would never do again imo.
muffler ftw!

I've got an ea82 with a 2 1/4 inch exhaust with a hotdog and i've had both a 3 1/2 cannon and a high flow muffler.
With the cannon it sounded hell tough doing 60 in fifth and was really great fun when when you nail it, but i like that sort of thing, now i'm using the muffler to stay legal.
Imo, yes it does, but it's all taste
Cheers sam

A cannon with a 3 inch outlet and a 4 inch overall diameter, will be louder than one with a 3 inch outlet and a 5 inch overall diameter. Due to more area for sound deadening
Hope i've been of some help

A 2" straight thru system with a normal shaped but straight thru muffler sounds a treat in my opinion.
Example of that setup on an EJ22 Brumby
