When you say it sounds like a tractor, is it louder than it should be or does the engine sound funny? If it just sounds funny, maybe the valve timing isnt quite right.
Being a boxer, they do all have a lovely off beat note too them, but should not sound like a tractor, even if they pull like one.

you only need to one tooth out on valve timiing and it will run and sound bad...i have done a few and stuffed up on some too and got it out

If it is louder check where the flanges meet the head its not unusual for these to crack normally its only a hairline one to start with!

Hey Fujisoobs,

A few things with the EA82:

If you've jumped a tooth on either cam you will notice a significant difference in performance.

If its ticking ignore it - some say to use a semi synthetic oil as this will reduce lifter tick.

If its a putting sorta sound, check all the exhaust gaskets, as said, it just needs to be a hair line and it will putter.

If it really sounds like a tractor you've probabily got a hole in the cat, resinator or rear muffler or maybe a hole in the pipe somewhere.

Good luck with it, let us know how it goes.

my car (my series) was making that sort of noise i found that it had a hole in the exhaust were the braket comes of it and joins the gearbox. easiest way to find the leak though is to start it then run your along the exhaust to try feel the air
