Leone Power steering Setup into a 90 Brumby - What do I need.

Grabbed a powersteering set up (pump & rack) out of a old leone. Went out and and started trying to install the pump. Put the bracket in I grabbed of the Leone - fitted.. got a little excited. Grabbed the pump and tried to install it... but oh no it doesn't quite fit.... FIRETRUCK! The bracket needs to go further away from the carb to clear a couple of bits on the manifold (I guess that the earlier Leone manifold was a bit different??). I tried packing out the gap between the bracket and the pump to get some more clearnace with some nuts some longer bolts - but was very dodgy and bot inline)

I'm hoping that I can just get a different bracket for it??
But I've got a feeling that the rack may not either fit either as it was 2WD into a 4WD.

Any Ideas?

hmmmm and you got the three belt pulley? , that I always thought was a two belt job until I realised the bit in between was also a pulley

Solution Found!!!

At the Suby Club Meeting last night I hit up the brains trust to see if there was a simple solution to this - there was!. The part that the steering pump was fouling on on the manifiold was a breather hose attatchement. The lads showed me that I can plug this hole on the mainfold to allow the pump to fit & simply unplug the other hole on the otherside of the air-cleaner, get a longer hose and re-run it - Whoo Hoo!!

I hooked into installing the power steering on the weekend and have got it all together.

Re-ran the break breather hose so it wasn't fouling on the pump.

The main snag when when I snapped the captive nut off when trying to undo the bolts on the rack bracket. I cut a small section out of the bracket and got the old nut out, put a new nut in there and jammed a few screwdrivers in so it stayed still while I did it up. Every nut bolt I take out on the ute has anti seize on it - I guess there are a few more to go.

The only thing that isn't quite right is the around the uni joint. The only thing I didn't take when I grabbed the gear from the wreckers was the shaft from the steering wheel that you attatch the uni assembly onto. When I put it back togther last night, I was struggling to get the joint / rubber coupling / uni joint assembly back togther. The angle just didn't seem right and the ruber coupling is bent.

I noticed the coupling was worn so I'm grabbing a new one today from Subaru - $46

Question - do I need to use the shaft from the steering (before the joint) from the donor car I grabbed the power steering gear off? or should the one that was already on the brumby fit and I'm missing something?

I'm guessing here. I was told before that on L series to swap between power or manual steer racks you need to use the uni joint bits that go with the rack. I reckon MY will be similar need given your description.

Here's a picture.

I've used everything off the power steering set up including the joint that attatches to the steering wheel shaft. The only thing I havent used is the shaft (the one directly from the steering wheel that goes through the fire wall) from the donor car - I've just attached it to the one that was there in the brumby - you can see what I mean about the coupling being bent - just not sure if this is right

Give myself an uppercut.

I put the new rubber coupling on today, and had another look at the angles of the joint. Took the top joint off, took the bottom joint off and swapped them over, put them back on, coupling in, nice and flat and as sweet as a nut. Uni/coulping/joint assembly was upside down.

Great Subiie. Really glad I did it.

I gave it a good work out last night out bush and it made it really pleasnt - no fighting the steering wheel while bouncing off rocks and no prosect of snapped fingers. Checked the fluid levels and for any loose bolts in it today - and no dramas. I expect it will be even better once I get an alignment done

Definatley a worthy mod if you can get one for the right price.

Yeah, my wife likes driving the Brumby now with the power steer in.
