Sorry. The title of this thread should be EJ20 engine with an EJ22 loom and computer. Duh!

I have a problem and I hope that you can help me.

I'm building Australia's only Meyers Manx SR and because it is on a shortened Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle) body pan, it is classified and an Individually Constructed Vehicle (ICV), according to the Australian Design Rules (ADRs).

As a result of that, I must fit a modern, fuel injected, computer controlled engine to it so that it can comply with the emissions rules.

Unfortunately the automotive part of my brain stopped developing in about the 1970s, so I have no understanding of modern engines and I'm now on a rapidly accelerating learning curve.

When I was buying the engine I got some bad advice along the lines of, that I should fit an after market computer to it, so I bought it without the Subaru computer and loom. I know. Silly me.

To keep it light and relatively simple, the engine is a single cam, non turbo EJ20.

The car is going to be a daily driver in all sorts of weather.

I bought the only computer and loom that I could get, which is from an EJ22. I've been told conflicting things about that.

The computer has been fitted to the car and the loom has been shortened and connected.

I'm close to trying to get it started, but I don't want to fry the computer if its not suitable.

Will it work?

Please tell me what I should do to get that combination going and about any possible problems that may arise. I have a thick skin, so if your advice is likely to upset me, let me have it, I won't take offence.

I need your help and advice.

Yep it will work, You will need to use the injectors from the EJ20 and you may have to use an EJ22 engine loom as some EJ20s had a fairly basic wiring setup. If you have a late model engine, one with the AFM on the throttle body then you could run into problems as you will have to make the EJ22 loom adapt to that setup (Havent done that one myself).

Did you buy a new body or rebuilt an old one?
I used to live and breathe vw's till about 8yrs ago when i went high tech(subaru)
Did you get a twin or quad cam ej20?
I don't think u will fry the computermight not fire up or run well.

Your best bet would be to get wiring diagrams from both the ej20 and ej22, then compare them, if all the pins/wires are in the same places on the plugs, you should be right.

If the above is correct, it should run, maybe a little rough, but it should run

Where did you get your adapter plate and flywheel made? I am hoping to start another project soon which is a beach buggy i bought before Xmas. I want to put the EJ18 that i have just pulled out of my impreza into it.

The car body is an original that Bruce Meyers helped me to find. It's the 23rd SR made. I've done a complete rebuild on a newly shortened pan.

The engine I have is a single cam per head non turbo EJ20.

I bought my adapter plate and flywheel from John Sherman in Queensland. His number is 0408 452 396. I got a Kombi 2 litre flywheel that he adapted and a heavy duty Kombi clutch. I strengthened the clutch throw out lever with a couple of small gussets and then had it heat treated to reduce stresses. The clutch is very easy on the leg to use.
