This all depends on point of view, ie: if you ask mr subaru then I don't think it would be a positive response BUT if you asked any of us crazy mob here (which you did) the answer would be HELL YEAH!!! or something to that effect.
The only things you really have to consider are the comprimise between onroad and offroad performance and if they'll fit under your guards.

If your car is a series one or two then I would say don't go any bigger than a 28 inch tyre. They fit OK inside the wheel wells with out a great deal of rubbing. 27's don't rub at all any where. If your wheels are 15 x 6 then yes you can put them on there.
If you have got a series 3 or later then you can go a 29. They have larger wheel wells due to the extra 50mm wheel base.

what do you want the car to do?
as i mentioned elsewhere wider offset is a good thing. Look for some forester / outback rims (they are +48) If you run 27's on them they wont rub anywhere. 28's will rub on the chassis rail at the front but its not a big deal.
You have to decide on your compromise between on road handling and offroad traction.
If you want to run a chunky offroad tyre that really bellies out when you deflate them then i would recommend a 15" rim with either 215/75R15 (28") or 205/75R15 (27.2") There is a ton of tread patterns available in these sizes, im running a goodyear wrangler ATR and they have been excellent so far.
If you want better road handling then a 16" rim is the go. you can get 215/65R16 (27") or 205/70R16 if you want somthing taller. Scott is running 215/65R16 bridgestone D693 AT's at the moment and they are an awesome compromise for a turbo car. They hang on really well on road but are still open enough to be useful offroad.
The white car your asking about is running 14" liberty rims, not really an option for you since i assume you have fitted the turbo brakes?

Thanks guys
I would like the car to be pain it the ass to toyota & nissan drivers
and go further than my xj jeep .
The cars going to see a lot of sand & mud work over the next few years .
I am planing long term so the rim that has the most tyre that suit our needs is for me .
finding the rims are another thing .Scott has a series 1 liberty ? with 16 " rims
Yes I have fitted the rs disk ect from my front cut .

A 15" forester or early outback rim sounds the go then. Or look for some cheap aftermarket 15" rims with a 45ish offset.
15" gives you the largest range of off road tyres in useful sizes.

Finding rims in Perth is not easy ! I would like to know if there is a white steel rim made for the 5 on 100pcd ? and if it has a 45mm off set
this is due to I can not get my hands on a set of subaru steel rims and ally one are silly prices for some thing that go around .
If I can get 16" white steel rims I will go that way .
