EJ P/Steering Rack into My's

Post by Matatak » Sun Dec 16, 2007 11:11 pm

so ive been told that they are to wide/long compared to the MY racks..but is there any other differences..
ie. do they mount up fine??

im sure if they mount up then there will be a way to get around the fact they are to wide. with some mods to the Tie Rod Ends.

i havent looked under my MY that hard but ive got the rack outta my G1S2 Lib which id prefer to use.

yes i no that the Fittings are different also for pressure and return lines but that can be easily worked around in my case aswell.

I heard that the way to do it was to fit the tie rod ends off the MY onto the lib rack but you can't because the thread is backwards. Not sure if the same would apply for the inner tie rod ends.

Best way is... you got both sitting there.. why don't u give it a crack.

so ur sayint he Liberty outer tie rod ends are left hand threaded onto the Inner Rod end??

seems highly unlikely.
i no the MY ones are right hand thread as ive had mine off once before

aand the Lib inners are Right hand thread. i no that to (had some off to)
90Brumby is running Lib Tie rod ends on his Rack to (non p/steer tho)

the only issue i can see is the mounting wether it will or not.

You guys should live in Townsville, i can go visit George at Townsville CV and tell him i want a rack end, with whatever thread dimensions i want and he will find something that will work!!! And CV's too...

MY with power steering and non-power steering have the EXACT same engine crossmember. Made the mistake of thinking i had to swap them many years ago when i changes mine over.

had to drill out the lower crossmember support thing, unbolts in ej's. Dunno what its called. had to enlarge the hole which the steering shaft goes through, solid mounted the new rack into position as the rubber didn't fit, bolted the lower xmember piece back up instead of welding. Waiting on the tie rod ends which will either consist of ej pieces which are threaded back and shortened or if there's not enough metal, my ones with thread inserted in and possibly helicoiled in the larger hole. Thing is they don't go back to work til the second so i wont find out til then.

I learnt something about these racks yesterday - you can only really put them in an L or MY if you have a lift kit. If you put them side by side you will notice that the splined bit which goes into your steering extension is at quite a different angle.

If you have a 3" this is enough to soak up the extra angle but anything less and you start running into a dangerous situation (you would quickly get hard/soft spots in your steering and run a big risk of it binding up on you at a critical moment).

Sorry forgot bout it, all done its fairly light steering but works well, the tie rods are the original impreza ones just shortened and threaded, was a pretty simple conversion... haven't noticed ne bumps or probs but haven't really driven it as iv got no exhaust and its a little loud...

I also put in the impreza steering column which with the 3 inch lift let me use the impreza's uni joint connector, no extension required...

My brother had a WRX rack in his RX Turbo with no lift and it did bind while turning. I now have the same rack in my RX Turbo with 2" lift and it works great.
