Hi, can anyone tell me what problems there could be with removing the back seat and seat belts in a 86 model LEONE sedan as far as registering the vehicle goes, I am in NSW. My plan is to cover the area behind the seat in aluminium and leave the seat out full time. Thanks for any advice, Toby

Thanks for that, are you in NSW and has any inspection station ever mentioned the lack of the seat. Any chances of a photo showing what you have done to cover the area, looking for ideas. Toby

Why are you looking to take them out perminantly for?

Its a work vehicle that is taken out on rough dirt roads and get all types of **** put into it from oil drums and farm parts so I'm sick of dirty seats and want more room, seats get full of dust. Toby

I took mine out too for storage. I probably wouldn't use ally plate in there... i used MDF that i carpeted.

Ah rite, sounds like a good idea, unfortunatly i have no idea what the legality is, cant imagin it would be too illigal

in qld you need a mod plate to convert it to a two seater

I can not say for now however in the past it has not been an issue if you rego as a 5 seater and then remove the seats (and I would suggest belts, or at least the female component). In my experience its only a drama if you want to make it more then 5 seats.

i belive that point is right you will need a mod plate but if you just leave it so that it only looks tempoary you will get away with it by saying you were repairing and had to go out and will put the seat back in when you get home, my cousin did that a few time in his bombadore and never had a problem
i know that when my mates cbr was a converted to a "single" seat to cut cost of rego because that was one of the things they were marked on wqas how many seats it had however i dont belive that is an issue in a car

Bikes are different in Qld. If you can remove the pegs and seat at the time of rego then yes you can rego as a single seater and its HEAPS cheaper then having the pillion passenger on there – its not the same for cars though. Doesn’t Qld still do it on the number of cylinders a car has to determine the starting cost for rego?

Yea thats right but to convert a bike to single seat it needs a mod plate

I had my old wagon with no rear seat for ages, was queried about it once i think at rego time, no biggie...besides its hardly a point of being illegal IMO.
It is illegal to have someone ride unsafely there, without seat beat, or even with, because without seat, the seat belt wont perform its function the same.
I would suggest do it properly and remove the seat belts also, so therefor you can say it is not intended to have anybody ride there.

yeah, if your compliance plate has seating cap. 5, most nsw rta pink and blue slip guys are gonna wanna see, 5 seats and belts, so too the rta roadside random inspections and the police. If any changes are made an engineer certificate is needed to present to rta. some random inspectors and ais and auvis may insist that you carry the original certificate with you all the time to present to them, but there is no law that states you must keep the 'original' in the car. legally a good copy should do.

nsw is going the new way of issuing compliance plates with codes for all changes listed on it so you don't need the paper certificate.

Engineers certificate is required, $350.00 plus gst is the quote I got and I'm told that is cheap. Needs cargo barrier and sealing to stop fumes and noise. Looks like the seat is going back in, damn. For a thousand dollar car its not worth it.
