My Surge Tank Is Under Way

Post by subarursliberty » Sun Apr 01, 2007 9:05 pm

Well I have thought about this for a long time like the rest of the project about how I was going to go about making things work. Well this is the beginings of my surge tank. Its being built into the fuel tank on the front drivers side. There is heaps of room there for fittings etc. Its made from 89mm x 89mm RHS with 2mm thick walls. Its 150mm high and will give me just over the 1 litre mark. More than enough. Its not a V8 supercar. Now all I have to do is finish it.

Are gal is easy to get off. I will give my mig a go and if it does not work I'll tack it in and take it down with my tacked up exhaust and get someone to tig it.

Yeah I think there is 4 all up. 3 up top and one at the bottom. One hole straight into the tank no need for a fitting then. One hole at the top from the top up pump. One hole at the top for the unused fuel from the motor. One hole at the bottom for the high pressure pump. Then i think I will have to make a plug for the original tank return as its from the surge tank now. Bu I will wait until I have the pump(s) before buying fittings and nuts to weld on.

Actually if I was building a pot I would have the inlet supply from the lift pump down the bottom because thats where the EFI pump draws from so that where you want the coolest fuel to be . Ideally you want the warmer fuel rising in the pot and returning to the fuel tank from the top of the swirl pot .

Cheers .

I would not put it at the bottom next to the efi pick up point. You will still get bubbles in there caused buy the standard pump surging and it to close for the efi pump to pick up.

I agree... i would rather some slightly warm fuel than have bubbles getting picked up by the EFI pump.

Mine is done with the Engine return line, low pressure feed line and a return line back to the tank all at the top of my surge tank and the high pressure feed line going to the motor, via an EFI pump, at the bottom of the tank.

Wow interesting. Seems like alot of work...wouldn't have been easier to run an external surge tank? Or just swap the tank for an EFI one?
Should do the trick anyways.

Yeah I thought about an external one but where to put it safely. Can be in the boot but must be sealed up like an engine bay. Engine bay, well I am getting as much as possible out of the engine bay for looks and easy to work in. Then I thought about it and desided in the tank. There's plenty of room there and runing lines etc will be easy as. EFI tank wont cut it in the end and this will just have to happen.
