another weber problem

hello all,i recently fitted a weber/holley 36/38 to my 87 brumbie. i have the usual problems with hesitation just off idle, etc but this is a new one..
If i drive like granny, as i do, I have no problems. But. at a rev range, say greater than about 60 to 70 km in third, the engine just cuts out, same pattern through all the gears. I am convinced it is not in the jetting, as planting the foot in third at a low speed, and opening the secondary, does not make it cut out till i reach the trouble spot in the rev range.I have had the jet size reduced from the largest possible, (140)which is how i bought it, to the next size down. The engine dies, then cuts back in, by which time i have reduced revs back to the safe range.
I suspect a problem with the acellarator pump, fuel bowl level, or some wierd little chamber within the carbie. Maybe someone has had a similar experience,
Thanks Tim

Hi Tim - Have you checked the secondary idle jet? I would also check the float level and the accelerator pump diaphragm.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to get my carbie fellow to check it out. I bought the carbie from a dealer on ebay, as a rekitted, correctly jetted etc for the ea81 motor.
I have since had the air bleeder enlarged a little, the secondary jet resized downwards, and he also blocked the fuel supply from the ecell pump to the secondary ,which was open , thus putting fuel into the secondary chamber even when the secondary is closed.( not quite sure about this last one).
the car has run quite well with this amount of tinkering, the problem with the cutting out is only couple of weeks old. I have tinkered with the air screw at the back of the carbie, and the idle screw, in an attempt to reduce the off idle hesitation. I have had some sucess, with a penalty of slightly high idle. I note that the smallest adjustment will work one day, and not the next. The high idle does help with running the air con in traffic though. There is a huge amount of material on the internet about this problem, the consensus seems to be that it is imperative to have this primary circut absaloutly spot on, as correct tuning of the carb hinges on primary and secondary idle. Regards, Tim

Yeah dont be shy with the primary idle - I think mine had to be upped - admitedly it was on an EA82. That should help your take off.

mostly solved

Hello All,
I took my ute to a carbie bloke on sat morning, after a bit of mucking around he removed the top cover and found that the cutting out was due to low float level. This was caused by the needle and seat assembly being loose, and thus making the float push down into the bowl, thereby not filling it. Make sense?.
He also put his diagnostic gadget into the exhaust pipe and decreed that it was running lean. He opened out the jets a bit and all was well. I took the car for a good run to geelong and back, about 120km at 100kmh to clean out the muck. It now goes heaps better. It STILL has the infuriating just off idle rough spot. I refuse to be defeated and will keep battling.
Cheers Tim
