3L H6 into an 'L'...????

Post by L-Raiser » Wed Feb 21, 2007 6:56 pm

Does anyone know if this engine conversion can be done...??????

My mechanic tells me the engine is too big and would require too much modification of the engine bay.....

Can anyone verify this...?

Ive heard that some have managed to get a 6cyl into a Brumby or two....

Coz I managed to come accross a decent halfcut of a 2003 H6 Outback that I cant stop drooling over......

It would give me excellent low down torque which is what I want, would give me the same power as an EJ20 Turbo but without the 'turbo lag'....:D

Hey you could always try?
Putting one in a brumby means taking out the radiator and putting it somewhere else, and your L doesn't have a tray...
A Lib and a Brumby both done by Rising Sun Steve.

I think with the 6's it'd be radiator support beam mods more than chassis mods.

COOL....thanks for the offer....I may take you up on it...

Gotta make a few more enquiries yet with engine conversion experts....

It would be very exciting indeed if I could get away with it...!

The dream of duel pipes out the back with sports exhausts on the 6cyl mmmmm sounds hot just thinking about it...if it could sound anything like a Porsche six....YUM!

Definitely.... matching the note of say a late 70's RS 2.7 Carrera would be sweet! Not sure how the 6's are for bottom end torque though, someone once told me they're a bit peaky for what they are. No doubt they'd pull more stumps than a 4 though.

I thought that the new EZ30 wasnt much bigger than the EJ20, something to do with its timing chains take up a lot less space than the timing belts of the EJ20.
You can get libs with either an EJ20 or a EZ30, there cant be that much difference

Fitting in the radiator and getting one that will keep her cool enough maybe a little bit of a prob, but it sure would sound like sex on wheels :D

a 2.5 will out do the 3ltr off road & on road ( manual 2.5 )with 4.444 ratios

I have a H6 outback & the the power is on about 3300 rpm , its really laggy you have nothing than more than you know what to do with if you were off road .

The H6 needs a stalled box off road to get it up the hills or a dam long run up at the bottom , then your ground speed is like 70ks at the bottom with wheels spinning & **** in the air < in the car

IMO you will be wasting your time , 2.5 n/a with 4.444 ratios , then a WRX with a stock 4.11 auto > the 2.2 is getting old .I have one done 209000ks from a 97 liberty these after all these years still impress me

you can get a wrx auto cut low K JDM under $2800.00 + gst these have a Td04 turbo & come on low around 2000rpm they have a well built trans

Tims post is on the mark , then Jays as he is the man for cutting **** up & fissing the **** together

long live subaru , seagull

I knew it...
What a co-incidence;

I just spent abit of time searching and finally found the thread from a little while ago.
showthread.php?t=4939&highlight=conversion
Unfortunately the website in there has been removed, but get this... it was all about some guy's L series wagon and he'd put a H6 Boxer into it. The spooky thing is it was bright yellow and had yellow colour coded bumpers and everything!
See in the post I even commented on it.
btw, from memory the car was driven very rarely on account of it always overheating - there is simply no room left in the engine bay for an adequate radiator.

Karen you may wish to contact Steve from Rising Sun Car Service in SA (he's also on this forum but best to give him a call at work). He's done a few H6 conversions. The most recent one he posted up on here is his son's Brumby (radiator located behind the cabin, in the tray).

Cheers Andrew, I called Steve (Rising Sun) yesterday and he said they had a LOT of trouble getting it to fit. They had to resort to cutting the front engine bay radiator support bar to get it to fit, then put a radiator just behind the front grill. He told me that in SA they are in no way legal either.

I went to measure this engine and compare it to the EA82 and the EZ30 was only 8mm longer and 13mm wider than the EA82! I believe the EZ30 is a fair bit smaller than the older EG33 that he used too.

Ive since decided to can that idea....as it is making a lot more sense to get a half cut that I can utilise more spare parts from ie half cut 2.5L Liberty/Outback. :) Plus the EZ30 was an auto that would have needed a replacement flywheel & starter motor to bring it to manual spec....

Nahhhh my EJ25 is looking better now....hehe

if you end up getting a ej25 id suggest you get a sohc engine not a quadcam one....ive seen alot of engines and the sohc engine seem a lot better...get one from a forester would be the go..at some stage when i get around to a convertion on mine ill be looking for a forester motor.....thats just my opinion but hey im sure someone else will tell ya different....ive been a mechanic for 17yrs and ive seen alot of subaru stuff....the quadcam engines seem to have alot of cyl head problems (ie leaking oil and coolant..can get costly if something goes wrong)....you will pay more for a forester 2.5 but...

yeah they do some are quadcam but as well...i reckon your chances of getting a lower km motor would be better with a forester thats all...but yes outback is an option as well...

I second what Seagull has to say. The H6 isn't the torque monster it should be.... Has hell grunt up top though....

And ask anyone who heard it on the sunday morning after the BBQ last year, with no muffling the thing sounds friggin awesome!!!!

Pity wifey wants me to keep it quiet, as it is most certainly porschesque in it's note.

Please watch before posting!

Does this car still exist? The thread was nearly 4 years ago.
