Hi all, What is involved in converting the rear drums to disk brakes. Does anyone know who in Sydney does this and is good, thanks.

2wd or 4wd?

Its a simply bolt up job you will need the disc brake hub, disc.caliper, brake line including the small flexible one and the backing plate

if its 2wd you'll need the rear discs, hubs, calipers etc. like what Master Suby Wan says from another 2wd with rear discs. if its 4wd, you'll need em from another 4wd with rear discs.

there was a thread on this a couple weeks back and it had a detailed DIY guide with pics on this topic.

There are still a few 2wd Vortexs about with rear disks. If you need 4wd ones expect them to be difficult to find and expensive. (about the $500 mark).

As said... if u got all the parts they are a direct bolt on and u should be able to do it yourself. Finding the parts will be the hard part... these are not available new. Good luck.

There's a couple of 2wd Vortex's down here (Vic) in a wreckers yard that still have the rear discs if you can't find one in NSW...

For a 4wd set, you can pick them up for around $125 (AUS) + shipping from the states...or $350 from NZ...

not really. I have a set here complete that I do not need bias valve will go with it.

Didn't the Subaru Royale L series sedan FWD have 4 wheel disc brakes, so would it be correct to assume that set of the rear of one of those would fit my 85' sedan FWD.

Last time I was there (about a month back) they had 3 Vortex's, one was a 4wd with the rear discs completely gone (right down to bare axles), and 2 2wd, with one missing part of the rear discs and the other was complete. I should be heading back there this weekend to have a look at something non-Subaru, and if so I'll have a better look at the Vortex's.

If they don't do mail-order lmk and I'll pull the discs for you & mail them up.

Good news , found a set of rear discs from Vortex Turbo FWD and subawreck Adelaide.

Dont know if you still need them, I have a set floating around somewhere, from my old Fwd Vortex .Im in Morisset, lower Newcastle. They would probably need machining , but also wont be back home for another week or so, (in QLD) . They'd be cheap.

Can you explain the bias valve for me? Is this the restrictor in the lines for cars running rear drums?

My RX coverted wagon's brakes could be better, I think. One thought I had was when the conversion to rear discs was carried out, the restrictor (?) was not removed. I believe it's the rear brakes that are not working as well as they could.

I ask this, as I had to put in a new master cylinder in a HZ Statesman I owned many years ago. When I got the new MC, the guy at the shop asked if it were rear discs or drums. As it was discs, he said the MC was the same, except he had to remove the restrictor between the front and rear chambers, as the disc equipped cars did not need it. He also mentioned some cars have these in the MC, while other have an actual separate valve, normally near the rear of the vehicle.

So Im wondering if and where this restrictor might be in an L series and whether I should investigate this as a possible cause to my average brake performance.

The Master cylinder on drum brakes use a valve to give residule line pressure to hold out the cups, if you fit discs to these cars it has no real affect. I cant remember seeing a bias valve on a Subi.
