lift question

Post by Chris_Rogers » Sun Oct 22, 2006 6:27 pm

when you guys raise these wagons what do you do for steering linkage?

mine is 25-30mm short due to a rack change and I figure you have a similar problem when you raise them. (I'm not raising mine.)

how do you fix it?

It is exteneded... with a bolt on spline extension (legal)... or cut and welded (illegal). You may also find replacing parts on the steering linkages with another uni joint or something like that might get u out of trouble.

ok I have two of these. the original L series one is VERY short. the BG5 item has a shaft in between the uni joints (about 45mm or so long) and that is the one that is 25mm short. other issue is that the joint is on at least a 75deg angle with it attached. I can't test the steering properly to see if this is actually a problem or not.

where do I find an extension?

The lib rack into the L will work...sorta !

.....bottom line, the angles are too diffrent, no worth the effort, does work well *coughdagerouscough* just get yourself a L ps rack.

Some lift kit brands do them... im not sure if the BYB one does or not... if you find a company that does make them with a bolt on spline extension im sure they will sell you just the extenstion. Might work *shrugs*.

a scorpion 40mm extension should do the trick for you. not cheap though about $120 but they are legal.

i agree with whats above too... depending on the angles of course

if the angle seems pretty close to stock, then go the spline extension to lengthen one of the splines and use your original uni joint

if the angles change a lot theres ones with the double uni joints and the shaft in the middle, can cut and weld the middle shaft to guit

also ive seen about 4 different lengths and types between my/L/lib steering bits, and they all used the same spline count

You`ll get uni joint binding because of the wrong angles...tho with enough effort and 2" of lift you may get around that with a custom made item !

The std L ps uni joint will go onto the lib rack(un-lifted)....so you would more or less just want a 2" or 3" lift kit steering extension for a p/s L series.

Al-tho again I hink the angles will be an issue to smooth operation.

Anyway the lib varible/sport steering rarely worked well...and ALWAYS failes after 15 years. Its described by many as "Scary" and "Wierd"...and thats when it works properly....and your going to have to wire in the psecu for it work...

ok so it looks like I cannot use that rack. I still have the other one so I'll ge the ends swapped.

doe the computer throw an error with it not there. (and I'm hoping the TRC unit doesn't have a fit!)
