Well the turbo engine is out...... thats a start!




Now I gotta sort out this mess!

Anyone got some tips for the wiring process? Its gonna be hell!

hey there...i have done this conversion myself and once you know what to do it all comes together... I had the whole wiring loom from an 86 RX to put into my 85 Touring wagon... heres what i did

1st- i took all of my wagon loom out which included dash loom, engine bay loom (cut it at drivers side rear door (where the taillights, indicators etc are)

2nd- layed the old wagon loom next to the new RX loom and you can compare both looms and where they go

3rd- put RX loom into wagon starting in the engine bay first then the dash and taillights etc...

Just use all the wiring from the donor car into your project car.

Thanks for that wrx_nut. Yeah it will be a bit harder for me aswell because my wagon is a series 2 ('87) where as the donor car is '85 so the headlights, wipers, indicators etc switchgear is different meaning extra work in joining it all together. Or maybe I could use the series 1 switchgear? anyone got any other tips

i say swap the lot...

yer swapping the lot wouldnt be too difficult

yeah I think i'll use a mixed bag of both series 1 & 2 switchgear. Too make things even more complicated the donor car has air suspension and its all connected into the loom for the car but its all being slowly sorted out. I'll get there.

Do an EJ conversion and keep the wiring!

You wont have to pick the air suspension wiring out just leave the controller out and remove the fuse for it. Dads RX was air suspension and it just has the fuse removed to stop it rousing while driving. Swap the entire front loom and use the donor car dash etc. The only things you loose are the headlights controlled on the indicator, the parker overide on top of the column and where your AC switch is. I like the earlier dash setup so i might be bias.

I've done a similar swap in the past.
85 RX sedan half cut into 85 wagon.

I had actually separated out the EFI loom from the rest during my conversion so that I could later wire up an EJ20T.
It would probably be easiest to remove these wires & put them into your wagon.
My half cut had the EFI taped up separately inside the conduit.
I'd simply follow all the wires from an EFI gear, ie engine, ECU, & then remove them & lay alongside the existing loom.
The only wires which are common are those for the dash gauges & warning lights (water temp, oil pressure). Everything else is unique.
That way you'll retain your existing setup.
You'll have to add a couple of wires onto the dash loom (turbo boost light, EFI warning light), & there's one loop wire which supplies the ECU with Ign On power.

(BTW I still have access to that separated EFI loom if you wanted it. Needs connecting to the dash loom, but thats it)

i've stripped down a turbo loom to engine only its not to hard.just lay the wiring out keeping everything that goes to the ecu and engine sensors,easy if everythings labelled.there is 1 or 2 wires that go to the dash[yellow /red can't think of the other colour]speed sensor and turbo boost light.then do the reverse to your wagon that is keeping lights etc and cut out engine stuff,if its a carb car won't be that hard.oops wagonist has covered it.

swap teh lot across- easier.

look closely at the looms - I have a feeling that the later dash may match up with the early loom.
