L Series AFM Update

Sorry i could not locate the other thread about this.

I have an update on the AFM situation… My research has uncovered the following. ALL RX’s were released with a Flap type AFM it is only the MPFI’ed L series that were released with the hotwire type. Obviously with the EA82T into the Touring wagon conversion it was/is just fortunate that the hotwire AFM and other bits match. As a result with the conversion I am about to undertake (RX into good carb L shell) I will just take the entire wiring/loom/ecu dash etc and just transplant into the L replacing all the other wiring.

Additional information –
- The hotwire type AFM is the better AFM of the 2 options (flap and hotwire).
- The difficulty in changing from the flap to hotwire is just way to difficult and would require a massive amount of stuffing around which will only produce minimal performance outcomes (therefore I will not be bothering with this component of the conversion).
- You can however ‘fine tune’ the flat type AFM’s however this is a very black art (at best) and it will be easy to make major mistakes and again will require a massive amount of stuffing around which will only produce minimal performance outcomes at the risk of reliability – therefore again something I am not willing to risk.

Hope that this information is of some use to some of you and yes 1 day I will move into EJ territory… I heard it may be some time around 2011.

The type of AFM (flapper/hotwire) is dependant on the type of ECU in you car.

The 84-86 3 Plug ECUs had the flapper
87-94 4 plug ECUs had the hotwire.

Which is why our RX's only had flappers, cos we only got them in 85-86
Turbo Vortex's from 87 on had hotwires.

We should start a sticky page that contains all this information
