L to ej auto conv interesting info

though i'd post up some auto info i,ve discovered it covers fitting a tt auto to a L behind ej.
1/ that l series auto tail shaft splines match the tt box.
2/ a l series auto box is 17mm shorter than a tt auto box,i think this may eliminate the need for tailshaft mods fingers crossed just got to see how the diff matches.
3/ it is believed by myself and another board member[thanks Dane] that if you take a series 1 fwd auto loom and plug it into the tt box add a switch for the duty sol you'll have a very capable offroad beastie.
Hope this info might draw some more over to the darkside of auto madness
4/use a awd auto loom if possible ,a fwd loom will work but a few pins and wires will have to be added and the speed sensor pins need moving if you want to convert to awd tcu which will then allow you to use a early wrx tcu to run the box like it should.
5/ at this stage it looks like the L auto crossmember and gearbox mounts will work.To do this you need to remove the tt mount plate and use to bits of angle iron shaped to fit the tt box with holes drilled to suit the L mounts.

Won't the TPS be wrong for it though?

point 2:

what gearbox cross member did you use?

Will is using a Ser1 FWD auto computer with a Ser1 EJ22. The TPS signal is a mismatch with the TT auto computer, not the TT box itself.

If all goes to plan he will end up with an open center diff AWD setup onroad, and locked 4WD at the flick of a switch. Should be a kickass setup

hurry up and do it posty - i wanna play ;)

With a 4.44 auto the bolt pattern will be sqare and the L is a Rectangular pattern meaning you will have to swap the flange at the fron of the diff. And yes it will be a kick arse setup when finished

So you aren't going to use the TT computer then?

nope ;)

To have electronically variable AWD as subaru designed it, yes you need the TT or WRX TCU. The wagon isnt going to be a race car, open center diff AWD will be fine for driving on road.

So, offroad the centre will have to be locked all the time? So it is basically going to be front wheel drive on road and then locked offroad?

brett think of the early L AWD boxes like princess has in his RX. they are AWD - but the center diff is open. There is no limited slip control of the center diff like the later boxes all have.

Then there were those cool vortex manual boxes that had dual range, AWD, with a lockable center diff. This essentially is what posty will end up with, except in automatic form.

offroad the center will have to be locked all the time - which is no different to any L series 4WD box, manual or auto. cruising up the beach will be fine in AWD, then just lock the center up for anything soft. essentially the same as my car now

Chris i have no pics but you'll need a crossmember from a l auto wagon.i have sedan one and it don't fit a wag.i'm only using L mounts as thats what i have.but after much measuring and looking at few pics i reckon you could fit lib mounts to the l crossmember ,both the l auto box and the lib box seem to ;line up at the L crossmember mounting area.another point my car is lifted and has room for movement/placement of the box ,it is also a factory auto.have heard stories that the auto's had bigger tran tunnels than the man but can't confirm only ever had L auto's.The L auto crossmember mounts at the back of the box so you'll need to see if your car has the mounting points.

mine has mounting points back there so I would say its going to work with a bit of fiddling ( I may have to angle the box back or drop the engine a fraction.
I'll know more once I get everything is place. (then I'll take snaps and prove the tunnel theory.)
