Clearance issues with my Ej conversion.

Just started fitting the ej22 and 5 speed AWD box into my MY. We are having trouble with clearance in the transmission tunnel. The bottom of the box is sitting on the sway bar and the top is pushing against the tranny tunnel.

We have lowered the engine crossmember an inch and slotted it as was recommended.

I have been told that the tailshaft has to be lengthened by 120mm but my measurements show that it will need to be 130mm could this be the problem?

Any help appreciated.

Front of engine bay also extremely cramped, could only fit the standard radiator with the fans removed. Any photos of ej22s in my's would be a lot of help. Especially of radiator. I'm stumped

When I did the ej conversion , all be it an ej18 , I had to mount the thermo fans on the outside of the Radiator as there was no room for anything in the engine bay.

thought that would have to be the case. What about the radiator outlets, the bottom one is just about pushed up against the timing belt cover, there is no way you could make a hose fit.

As Mike said, mount the thermos up stream. You'll usually need to reverse the polarity and the fan blade direction for this to work properly.

Your measurements on the tailshaft are incorrect, it will be 120mm. I think you're looking at the dust shield on the tailshaft as a guide, these normally do sit 10mm clear of the gearbox.

I managed to squeeze my thermos on the inside of the radiator, but only *just*. As for outlets, I found some flexible hose that I bent into weird shapes to make it fit then when it was running drove it to a radiator shop and said 'make the hoses work'. I went back at the end of the day and he'd woven magic and found hoses suitable for the rather extreme bends.

This was an EJ18 conversion into an MY sedan.

So this is normal?

Yup that looks about right to me... Mine was really tight as well. The hose that ended up fitting to it had a right angle downwards right at the fitting.

Alternatively a radiator shop could also solder on a right angle outlet to it.

Thanks for that. Any idea about the sway bar can't see how the box will fit without constantly rubbing against it.

I had my radiator moddified to suit my exact requirements as far as outlets was concerned , I then made a hose shape out of wire and went to the auto shop with the largest range of hoses and found one to suit my needs.

temporarily you could just take the sway bar out ... get all the other bugs ironed out first ... if it's an offroad car leave it off, daily driver you'll want to work out how to fit it back on :)

You need to remove the sway bar when you don't have a lift kit. AC fans from an MY fit perfectly bewteen the motor and rad. They also spin enough to keep it cool. I only have one one my car and it never gets hot. When I stop at the lights for a while the temp will get up to when the fan comes on automatically, it cools the car and then turns off.

Sway bar from a 4wd auto has a different bump over the exhaust. The bump is round instead of square. I used this with a full time L box and it helped with the clearance.

The cars not for offroading unfortunately, It will handle like a piece of crud without the swaybar. Maybe this point should be mentioned in the conversion overviews as it seems pretty important.

you could always get a custom sway bar made. Last one I have done was only about $300 with new custom mounts.

What are the dimensions of the MY A/C fan? ie diameter/thickness
Looking for something to fit into my EJ20T L with twin core rad.
