3D Printed Replacement Parts ...

Post by Bantum » Fri Nov 06, 2015 1:17 pm

With the advent of some new 3D printing technology, finally we have been able to re-create all those broken / sun faded plastic parts ...

Well its done, so here are a few to get you started :

• Front Fender ... BRUMBY :

• Tail gate ... SUBARU GL :

• Bonnet ... 4WD :

They can be found here : http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1065522

Haven't got round to printing them yet though ... :(

Will add more here as they become available ... :)
( You're welcome to post any that you find )

Ciao, Bantum ...

P.S. - I couldn't find a heading to put this under so an admin/techie may need to create a new section & move this thread later...

Whats the end product like though, for durability and longevity?
Isn't 3d printing mainly just for prototyping?

Depends on alot of variables ;) I'm sure Bantum can explain them, but I'd say there is a suitable plastic out there and these 3d printed parts would last as long or longer than the original equipment.

Really nice work Bantum! I love the badges as well. You would have to get them chromed though for them to look original. There is chroming places around, it's quite exxy though and I wonder if they would do plastic.

Print success ...

Post by Bantum » Fri Nov 06, 2015 9:41 pm

Some examples can be found by following the links above ... ;)

The print quality is dependant on a few factors :
  • Thickness of layers.
  • Type of plastic used.
  • Temperature.
Most common types of plastic:
  • PLA ( Polylactic Acid ) - Is bio degradable & not really suitable for these applications.
  • ABS ( Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene ) - Is exactly the same stuff the manufactures use for most of their parts.
  • PET ( Polyethylene terephthalate ) - Stuff used in plastic drink bottles.
  • PC ( Polycarbonate ) - Used for Remote control Body shells ...
  • TPE ( Thermoplastic Elastomers ) - Rubber equivalent for flexible parts ...
There's quite a few more out there, but you get the jist of it ...

ABS tis generally ok for most applications, should last about the same as original ( better if kept it out of sun )& If you want a really fine finish - you can do what's called 'vapouring' - ( fumes from acetone ) to smooth it out ...

Chrome finish can be done on plastic, I just haven't found place that does it yet ... :/

Note : Do be careful not to inhale the fumes given off while printing with ABS, as it can be harmful to you ... :???:

There is a metal finishers around the corner from where I work that chromes plastics. To get a decent finish you would have to acetone vapour the ABS first.

Print it in aluminium at CSIRO and it'll last pretty much forever
Or for overkill, titanium.
We had a few of the guys at work visit CSIRO recently and they were pretty worried as our core business is making grinding machines.
Additive manufacturing is going to allow our older Subaru's to live forever...
1989 Brumby - Shiny new red paint, stroked EJ20 phase 2 SOHC with Darton sleeves bored to EJ22, Wiseco high-compression pistons, Delta 2000 grind cams , EJ/XT6 5 stud with WRX 4/2 pots, 5-speed, 86 GTS seats and so much more.

When can we get our hands on a metal 3D printer?? Probably never if the government has their way. Imagine the chaos of people being able to print whatever metal object they can design? What if they get the type of metal to use wrong and it's not up to the task like a manufactured aftermarket part?

Or how about that issue of unregulated firearm production?

It'll be tightly regulated and not make it to the average home user I reckon. Sounds like awesome technology though!

3D Metal Printers :

Post by Bantum » Sat Nov 14, 2015 2:50 pm

Its not that far away, as dfoyl mentioned CSIRO have been working on it + there are a few places online that can print in metal.

We can also do what's called a 'lossless' print or mould. Then get that cast in what ever metal you want.

As to quality control, is dependant on what type of metal you use & your facility ( if done in a backyard furnace for example ) Government controls over this are limited + local council may not like you having open fires, but if its a well built furnace you shouldn't have any problems.

Laser metal prints are also a possibility - although I'd note that importation of such laser tech is restricted, as soon as they come down in price expect to see a lot more of them ... :/

So metal 'printing' is coming in the not so distant future ... :D

3D printers that print in metal already exist and are being used commercially, they're just astronomically expensive ;)

It would be alot easier to use a cheaper 3D printer to print something in plastic or wax to use as a plug to make a mold for casting. But if you wanted exact tolerances it would still need machining after.

thought of another part needing some 3D attention - that front door sill trim panel plug piece, [front outer seat mount bolt 'hood] that seems to be missing on most MY. You know, flat, about 30mm wide, ~65 mm long and L shaped ??

Bantum, is there a way to find the size of each file on thingverse of yours before committing to a download button click. I often feel like someone in the "if youneed to ask, you can't afford it" class on the internet.

an eg of the BRUMBY flank badge p'raps?

Yep, scroll down to 'thing files' & click on that - should show all objects with individual file size. Note you can download just the one you want, or the whole lot via zip ...

Wonder if there was a fuel cap release mechanism for this ...? Don't recall seeing any. Got any pictures of yours ?

Ah that could be it, maybe in the sedans? Next time I'm out there I'll take a photo or two.

same thought here as well fuel door opener , and is it same left to right ? Just makes it look tidier with no gaping hole. I have used silver duct tape to cover up.

Another part ...left and right, the little black trim piece that is on the sides that the tailgate closes up next to, plug end fits under the stainless steel top trims.
