Hi Guys
Just bought a 1990 Brumby in pretty good order - 150000km - red, with the moon-roofs - and now looking for an air-conditioner for it. - It gets pretty hot in parts down here in SA.
Questions:
1. Will air-conditioners from later model Subbies fit the Brumby, and if so, which ones.
2. Are there any air-conditioners for sale at the moment? I have looked through the forums but couldn't find any.

1. I haven't tried anything from a later model (eg. L-series), but your best bet is going to be an MY touring wagon or similar. I fitted mine from a 84 coupe.

Short list : AC compressor and bloody heavy support bracket, AC lines, dryer, dual thermo fans, pulley on front of crank to drive compressor and remove the crank-driven radiator fan, AC radiator (ensure the radiator is matched to the AC lines, there are at least 2 different types and are not interchangeable), wiring including relay block that sits on drivers side shock tower (it has a plug just inside from the firewall, so can be removed in two pieces), and I think that's all under the bonnet. Inside, heater/cooler as a complete unit (from memory the left side is common and the right side is unique, I simply changed the entire unit), control wiring and AC button in middle of dash, glovebox (AC cars have a shorter glove box).

It's not a hugely difficult job, but it takes quite a bit of time (mounting the AC compressor bracket was the toughest for me, but with the right tools it would have been a lot quicker) - I'd estimate something around 40 hours including dismantling from donor.

First off, nice score of a low Kay Targa Top Brumby!!
Ditto to most of what dfoyl said, with the exception of the 40 hours required!!
Unless you are factoring in lots of beers in between dfoyl?? :)
I reckon 10 hours tops inc stripping goodies from a donor car.
No other system will fit direct to your EA81 powered Brumby other than if it comes from an EA81 powered car.
So at wreckers look for any EA81 powered sedans wagons or coupes up till the end of 1984, or Brumbys till '92.
Just a couple of things missing from the above list are the fuse, fuse holder and relay that sits near to the main fuse box under the dash.
It hangs down from the main loom and all unplugs easily.
Also the 'idle up' solenoid and vac pipe plus the bracket that sits on the carbie.

I sold a complete system 2 weeks ago for $450 (see my ad under 'wrecking MY' in Brisbane) I have another complete system that I have set aside for my own coupe project, but that is wayyyyy off getting started so if you cant find one local let me know and I may part with it. It does have a mismatched condenser (some systems are 'o' ringed and others are flare) so will need 2 small alloy pipes made, which is best done after it is all fitted to the car.

Yes, there were a few beer o'clock breaks in that 40 hour time span. There were also a few trips back to the wreckers to pick up parts I left behind (the most obvious being the condensor), and of course when I found out about the mis-matching pipes. Hence, try to make sure it's all off one car.
These days it's a lot harder to find ANY MY at a wrecking yard, back when I fitted it I had about 4-5 handy and I was trying to cherry pick the best bits from different cars.

If you could find a way of getting a ribbed belt compressor to run in an MY engined car and you had all the bits from the later model subaru doner car. then (money given) you could make it work.

I have 2 MY parts cars here in Adelaide ( Noarlunga area) that you can take the A/C system out of - if you provide the labor and make an offer that is not low ball. MYs are getting rare in Adelaide, and ones with AC even rarer. Their A/Cs were both running when "archived' - but everything deteriorates over time,

-Else I can just keep them for my own use in the future. I now have several spare parts cars, because while you can get recon units from interstate "specialists" , they never have all the parts ( or even know about them - Glove box being a good example), and the shipping is a killer.



I have combined the above list for you

Short list :

How did you go Psychopig7? Did you get a complete kit with the 3 V Belt Crank Pulley? These 3 belt pulleys make a good start to Power Steering :)

Psychopig7 contacted me, but then pulled out of the purchase - he hassent been on the form for 4 months and did not reply to a group invite.

I still have the full a/c kit, now disassembled.
