says you can create your own customised timing maps - chuck away the dizzy springs and weights.....it'd wanna go at least US$381.99 better anyway!

A tempting item, programmable timing curves at certain RPM's all done on a windows based program from the comfort of your laptop. All my EA81's and variants thereof so far have suffered from ignition problems of some sort or another, this would no doubt eliminate all of that. But I can't help but think it would be wasted on our little old Jap engines, since they're talking about boost settings and Nitrous settings

Probably would go alot better, but we wouldn't be using all of it's potential I think. And 4.7 lbs! Must be one big box of tricks, good luck hiding it from any cops looking for a reason to crush your car
Will it ever end!?

I wouldnt bother Jonno. Unless your going for economy or emmissions, programmable ignition isnt gonna magically allow you to advance your timing more and produce more power. You could tune the distributor for just as much power.

Was hoping to set the seed for more cashed up members to try first :) as for working the dizzy - I passed up the opportunity to own a Sun distributor machine thirty years ago. A weeks wages, did not understand how it was to be worked , had only seen it sit, never put to work by any of the mechanical staff. Now , it might be handy - on old stuff. Probably near 20 years ago a fella was tinkering with this programmable timing box concept and getting good results on different fuels.

I've still got an MSD boost timing master box of goodness to utilise before I go buy any more gadgets for future use :)

Why not just bite the bullet and have a go at an EJ conversion...

Then you'll know what we're talking about when we say "don't bother"!

Wanna make a fast EA?
Re sleeve the bores, weld up the ports in the heads and start from scratch with them, oversized valves at 23 degrees, little more compression, lumpy as cam, forged internals, custom intake, a big 350 holley, FULL MSD ignition gear, run E85 fuel.
Only thing missing is an STi turbo, the power would be nice but with something worked this far it would be wrong if it didn't go brap brap brap sututututu do it must have a turbo.
Give me a year or 2 and I will be taking an EA81 as far as possible. Only thing is I'm planning to take the heads to someone who will charge about $1000 per head. But he is one of if not the best in the world

Doing this purely for the enjoyment and the fact I thought it would be cool to see a real Subaru engine actually make some REAL power. Will be a bloody beast!

Cheers Cam

reply from blackbox

Hello steptoe,

Sorry, the BlackBox will only work with our Accuspark ignition or similar. Most factory igntions don’t switch to 0 volts, and therefore won’t work with it

Regards
Jane

Nipped that in the bud , no suggestion they do ignition modules for old subes

Why not go down the SubiDoug route?

That keeps you in the EA department and would get some performance gain of sorts...

:) already have fuel delivery under control, was thinking if I could get a cheap form of spark control to tinker with this sounded ideal. If I was ever to go turbo on EA81 with LPG , is said the dizzy needs to be staked/locked up at a constant ~16 DBTDC , but also sitting on an MSD boost sensing spark control box so may be first step if I ever get there
