Well it depends on what you're after. I feel you can't get much better for an MY / L than the 4.11 turbo box thats normally fitted. It's an AWD unit, being from the same donor vehicle and it allows you to use the beefy hydraulic pull type clutch.
Other people on this board have used the later Forester / Outback AWD dual range box. This has again a hydraulic actuated clutch, albeit a push style one. It's low range ratio is a laughable 1.1:1 and when you factor in that most of these have a 3.9:1 final drive it doesn't offer much over the turbo box.
Some board members use the AWD DR box and using L series components modify the low range to be 1.5:1, this appears to be the best option for offroading a manual box.
The last option is to use an adaptor plate and run an L series 5 speed box. This is a selectable 4WD box with either 3.7 or 3.9 final drive and 1.5 low range. The big drawback to using this box is the piddly clutch setup, which really is not enough to hold the power of even a stock turbo motor. Very popular with the NA EJ crowd though. I beleive there is also a way to use the stock EJ flywheel and using a hybrid clutch get enough clamp to hold it.

At the end of the day it really comes down to what you want to use it for. If its mainly a road car, I'd opt for the turbo gearbox, if its an offroader I'd look at DR, although the turbo gearbox isn't too bad in this department.

cool thanks tim wat would you do about the rear diff since they use 4.11 ratio.Would use use the same diff out of the same donor or can you swap the internals into a 3.9 ratio diff. How do the all wheel drive boxs go of road do you miss not having the low range compared to the l series 5 speed or theres enough power that you don't need the low range

The rear diffs are not hard to come by, several Liberty models had 4.11 diffs that bolt up directly into an MY / L series. You could also swap a 4.11 centre from another R160 diff into your current housing.
I don't honestly know how the AWD boxes go offroad... yet. I'll have an answer from my own experience in a month or two, but for now I can only suggest an opinion from what I've seen. That is, they're very good.

the brumby and the my are the same all the way thru the brumby models are they.Cause i might get a brumby but not sure of that yet and if anything the engine and everything will go into it that if i get.Or do the brumbys change or the years in the way they have changed driveline mounting points and everything else
