L series flares ??

After fitting the Viscous gearbox to my L series wagon, the speedo was slighly out. I corrected the speedo by fitting a set of 14" Sunrasia style wheels.
The speedo is now spot on, but the tyres stick out.
Appart from Flexy Flares and Clark rubber strips, does anybody have another way of covering the tyres up?

Rolled guards could do the trick or something like this US fella's done:

They look great, but I was after something cheap and simple, just something different.

I'm sure they're factory flares off some other 4wd that he's transplanted to his subi, they're not rolled. Can't get much cheaper than that without looking cheap I think...
Nothing wrong with the flexi flares, I've never liked them though so I held out until I found a set of scorpions
But that wasn't a "cheap fix"!

It looks like the arches have been cut to fit them.
Just trying to make it legal, cutting guards is a lot of work.
Just tryed some outback flares, the front ones are about the right diameter, but to thin.
The rear ones are the right thickness, but diameter is miles out.
I'll keep looking.

Yeah being an offroader the guards probably have been cut.
Another couple of options I've just thought about:
Find a factory guard from another car that fits your requirements and do a cut and shut, soldering is probably the easiest way to go for the front. The rears you should be able to get away without flares if your rims were anything like mine, they *just* tucked in but could be considered boarderline by mr plod.
Fibre glass up a set of custom flares... But that would only be cheap if you had all the fibre glassing gear already.

I thought I was the only one on here from the Tambo Valley! (I dont live at home now, but still got heaps of subaru parts at my parents place at Swifts Ck)
