L Series. EA81 can I get a lower low range?

Got a 92 L Series wagon. EA82. Going 14 inch wheels and bigger tyres and was wanting to know if you can get lower low range gears? Owned the same car years ago and remember the low range not being low enough once I put the bigger wheels on.

Pretty much the only way to do it is to change the diff ratio. And the easiest way to do this is to get an EJ AWD gearbox, a 4.11 ring and pinion gearset (front diff), L series 1.59:1 low range and put it all together in EA gearbox cases.
This will give you a bolt up AWD gearbox (to the engine) that's got the stock L series low range and will compensate for larger tyres with the 4.11 ratio diffs. This is a great setup for 27 inch tyres. You will need a custom tail shaft, custom (shortened) gear linkages and a gearbox crossmember...

Thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. But the only thing I don't understand is why the need of the AWD gearbox?

You dont NEED it but its the better box you can aim for. It eliminates the front wheel spin the 2wd box give when you upgrade to the bigger engines. But if you stay with your old ea82 and with the bigger tyres you might be ok with the Fwd. BUT once you got the big tyres, the lower range gearbox. U'll next be wanting a bigger engine:) Like all of us:p

Because the pinion shafts are easily interchangeable and off the shelf. If you did the PT4wd gearbox you'd need to press all the lower gears off, then cut and shut the pinion shaft followed by re-pressing all the gears back on.
Plus the advantage of the AWD would be great to have too.

Only if you can afford to do it. Adding the DCCD could be easiest as the L series AWD with the centre diff lock is much harder to find - plus you'll still need to do a cut and shut on the pinion shaft for the centre diff lock box.

Not if you're changing the diff ratio in accordance with the tyre size you'll be running! That's part of the whole idea behind it. Changing to the 4.11 and 27's should bring the drive train back to almost a stock level of performance.
I've spoken to a fella about the diff ratio change to 4.11 and he said it'll transform my L series with the 27's. Add the EJ22 to this and it'll be an awesome combination!
