Is an ej16 a good conversion for Brumby ?

Post by Brumby91 » Thu Oct 06, 2011 9:12 pm

As the title suggests, is an ej16 a good transplant into a brumby? I can get my hands on one and the wiring loom! Any downsides to this motor ( I'm not after a powerhouse just a reliable everyday'r)

It may be cheaper but it would be better and 'cheaper' in the long run (think resale value) to put a decent EJ20, 22 or 25 in there. And the extra power of the bigger motor will be welcome.
Even if the EJ16 is free it will still only save you a couple of hundred ($500-1000 max) dollars in the long run since the cost of the conversion and subsequent engineering and licencing etc wil be the same.

I wouldn't bother unless it IS free !!

your in sa, you cant get it done anyway........

if its free and your not planning to get it engineered go for it. Then if you want the more power you can just dump a 20 or so in as im fairly (75%) they are all the same engine mounts and such

yeah south Aus will jump on anything they find. We don't have to go over the pits, however if a cop knows his stuff pulls you over and sees it your done for........ ala steves brumby

even if the car is engineered with another engine most will say it cant be registered.

a little story to portray the state of vehicles in SA.
i got pulled over for an RBT i was sober so not to bothered cause i dont like drunk drivers. what pissed me off was i nearly got a defect for my lights in lisa (my L series) reason?

'I had illegally modified them to put out LESS light than factory' its a 20 year old car and the lights are crap from factory. Eventually i bluffed my way out, take as many badge numbers and phone numbers as you can and ask for large numbers of forms.

They told me to fix it and on i went but thats how bad they are

That's a bad one spike, must have been annoying :???:

I can't believe you would get pulled over for that, when I have been past (and driving in front of once) many police cars in my bomb and it's missing a wing mirror! Plus I still display P's I thought they'd be all over me :???:

64kW from an EJ16?? Why have I got one sitting around at that output? I was thinking just becuse it is an EJ to ponder, turbo maybe ? Maybe if I get a boat, I will have an anchor for it :'

@silver bullet, i had already been pulled over for a legit reason RBT.
@steptoe, i was planning on putting one in an offroad race buggy replacing its 1.3 alfasud engine. We were going to get a little more power though with duel port heads and what not if they would fit.

south australia is one of the worst place for anything vehicle wise. People complain about perth and other states because of the need to go over the pits every year, however they accept an engineers report and that its safe, regency makes there own rules per person.

2 more examples, a friend of mine with a 180B rally car under rally registration.
first time he took it in to get it okayed got though everything except the noise meter, there are specific testing requirements in the ADRs royghly being at 3000RPM in the open with the meter standing 10metres away. Instead the testing was done at max revs, in the shed, with the flat bed truck it came in on still in position and the meter less than 5 metres away.
when he enquired as to why it was done this way "thats the way WE do it"

the other was being caught driving to the workshop (under rally registration this is allowed) he got a letter from the DOT saying his registration had been cancelled. effectivly he got a defect without being stopped, without being seen by a police officer.

Ps adelaide sucks

Engine mounts will be the same but the ECU wiring will be different for the given engine to run it properly. As Dane - GOD - he's done it before from EJ18 to EJ22 and it didn't run properly until he swapped the wiring out to the EJ22 wiring and ECU.

Cheers
