Is it possoble.

I have a 90 model brumby and would like to fit disc brakes to the rear of it.
At my disposal are an 84 Brumby and 89 L series. Can I utalise parts from either car to give rear disc brakes to my Brumby without the risk of the rear brakes being to powerfull and locking up befor the front.

Thanks Carl

Beat me to it revmax. Im looking to do the same, and probably new front as well as they dont look to good. so Im wanting 4 Disc brakes, what do people suggest? I can probably source most parts (subareck) calipers and roters are farely cheap off ebay or supercheap auto (2 for 1!)

Front brakes won't fit without lots of magic and machining

you need a set of XT or L turbo rear brakes from a 4wd version not 2wd

Nice cheers toonga, so just a very simple conversion. You dont bother with arms? Yeah i will be painting most of the bits for cosmetic reasons, is that ok?. Im like that. How much should i pay do you think? Subareck is ALWAYS over priced!

L have drum rears... you also may have to fit a variable valve or use a disk brake rear master cylinder... if that made any sense

it HAS to be a turbo... standard L,s are drum

Don't limit your searches of wrecks to turbo models though. A non turbo model could have easily had discs fitted to it (like you are intending to do to yours). L series an MY are all so old now there's a good chance it's been modded so you could find discs on just about any variety.
Just look at L series or MY which might have rear discs, just make sure it's a 4x4 rear end. The 2wd ones can't be fitted to 4x4 hubs.

That sorta made sense, if and when i might have to get someone to help. Are there any aftermarket options?

yea crossbred make a full lib conversion for MY and L series otherwise theres the op of converting to disk rear then upgrading disks, calipers etc.... brumby kid... iv got a 12 inch fusion active tube sub thing... just wondering if i can fit it in a brumby... do you reckon you could measure out max room behind the seats of yours maybe... its about 35cm wide

What is it exactly? Why does it go behind the seats? Um yeah sure will measure tomorrow.

its a subwoofer usually its in the boot of my benz (pointless due to the sealed soundproofed boot) but if i decide on a brumby it will become my daily meaning ill want the sub in that but being a ute it,ll have to go behind seats so yea kinda wanna know before i officially decide on a wagon or ute MY

The hardest part of sticking a disc brake rear end from an L Series RX or auto turbo sedan, 4WD Vortex is sourcing and handing over the money. The rest is an absolute dream to fit, in no time at all, almost like they were made to fit MY Brumby - just a metal pipe rebend and she is apples. I found no need to change proportioning etc and turned my brakes into almost like ABS - stomp on them on a wet road and they grip and I can steer and keep control too.

Had to wait a few weeks to test out on the wet tar, could not fault them at all

If Australia was serious about road safety drum brakes should have been banned from new cars since the mid eighties - at least. On the rears they don't seem to have worked much on my ute, in 100,000km, did not wear, did not leak either but braking with 4WDiscs made my Brumby heaps better.

The only reason drums are bad is because they need constant maintenance if your willing to look after them then their fine... But discs dont fill up with mud and stop working

The crossbred conversion kit is about $1200 I think, and that includes you posting over exchange parts, and doesn't include any of the liberty suspension and brakes you need for it.
It's designed to completely replace your entire breaking system and is only really worth it for a turbo converted street car where the owner wants full WRX braking power. It also involved swapping the front shocks/springs for liberty/wrx ones. You also need to swap your wheels for the 5stud variety as it changes your hubs for 5stud ones.
Not really worth it if your main aim is just to do away with yucky drums.

Yeah I paid $450 for the rear discs on my wagon, and they made a good difference, and couldn't get the rear to lock first, even on gravel.

I have now put a Crossbred kit on my RX, but I am yet to complete the car, so testing may be a few months off.
