Canister, is it a must?
Canister, is it a must?
Hi guys,
Well after replacing the MPFI ea82 in my L to the EJ22 and now as you all know i've placed a EJ25, I found that the ej25 didn't have a canister.
I'm not sure if i'm right but i've heard/read that fuel tank bust open under pressure and isn't the canister supposed to relive that pressure allowing the tank to 'breath'? Should i be worried that the newer EJ25 didn't have a canister and will cause problems??
Thx

The EJ25 should have had a canister, its mandatory under EPA law
It uses activated carbon to absorb the fuel vapour and turn it back into a liquid so it can be used by the engine, as opposed to being vented to the atmosphere where it will cause an explosion hazard

i threw mine out when i converted wanky wagon.
blocked the hoses that ran to it with bolts and hose clamps.
modified the fuel tank cap so it wasnt air tight (drilled a hole in it from memory)
worked well for me.
i had a fair bit of pressure build up in my tank before i did this mod.

also thinking about the canister and your car not having one may be due to it being a lancaster from a different part of the world.

I'm sure someone somewhere will have a canister that you can barter for

Jules, common, I've got like three cannisters but how do i plumb it to the lines if there isn't one from factory?

Guy simplest way is to look under the bonnet of an EJ22 or EJ25 to find out where the pipes run.

You also need to decide whether it's a 2 hose or 3 hose canister, one of my old WRX's MY99 used to run like a pig every time one of the hoses fell off ~ the thinnest one on the right from memory which I think was vacuum, went to a small pipe under the manifold near the ps pump.

Your engine does have the vacuum line from the tank, through the purge soliniod and back into the manifold, so never going to bust your fuel tank. If I was concerned that much about it, I'd just put an old canister in the factory L.Series place and push the vacuum lines under the engine cover
