5 stud on vortex.

Hi guys, I'm thinking of doing a 5stud conversion to the vortex. Since i'm still building my L series i want to try and keep cost to a minimum.

Parts i already have:
Front lower arms with tapered end for Lib ball joint
Front Lib hubs
Front Lib or RS calipers and disks

Well pretty much everything for the front.

Now would i be able to use the Vortex rack end joint on a lib hub?
Would i be able to bolt a Lib rack end joint on the Vortex rack?

Now for the rear...
Its got disks on the rear and i'm thinking of welding the 4 bolt holes and re-drilling the 5 studs holes.
Would anyone know if the rear disks are made of cast like a drum or metal?
I know, its not legal, its doggy etc etc etc

I would then don't need to change the calipers etc and no need for a backing plate. Only problem i find is i won't have a hand brake anymore.
Guess I'll just leave it in gear:p

I'm just thinking of doing it:)
Thoughts????

I've been doing a lot of research on this myself as I'd also like to move to 5 stud hubs.
From what I've been reading on USMB if you have the front lower control arms sorted that the main obstacle.
According to this thread, http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/sho ... hp?t=50400 if you use XT-6 tie rod ends, easily found online, you should be fine.

This is an interesting thread as well with people showing their conversions and listing the parts they used http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/sho ... p?t=118838

I think you will find that you cannot machine enough off the center of the disc to get the 5 studs in.

What I have done previously is to machine off the outside of an old 4 stud brake drum so it fits inside a liberty disc (same as the liberty hub would) and redrill that to 5 stud. You then either just mount your existing disc brake higher to suit the bigger disc (this is what I did at first) and run a hydraulic handbrake. Or modify a liberty backing plate to fit and use that (this is much better as you can run the liberty handbrake)

Cheers

Word was some time ago that Honda Accord that had handbraked disc rear about 78 80 models? their caliper inner half with the handbrake gear mated up to the subaru L Series rear caliper mounting half.

So i can't just remove the 4 studs on the rear disks, weld it up and redrill 5 holes and put the 5 stud in????

I don't really want to go machining stuff etc etc as all my budget is going towards the L series at the moment.

I wish the rear was as simple as the front:(

Give me five

Hi Guy
The hubs can be redrilled to 114.5 x 4.
There was a thread long ago about "Seagull" saying he redrills them to the ford standard 5 stud configuration. One of the other b members made up his own 4 to 5 stud spacer plates from briss alloy. He machined the hubs to fit the spacer and to make sure the hub held the weight and not the studs. You can chase up ready made spacers from the US , there are companies that do them. Other than that its either get a set of xt rears mailed from US or crossbreed.
Cheers Pete

Was that 4 meant to be a 5?

Ok, assuming i get a set of xt6 rears, Would i need just the hub and disk or would i need, caliper, arm etc etc and more?

From the link I posted above.
Rear stuff:
Hub - XT6 4wd
Backing plate - XT6 2wd or 4wd (2wd requires modification)
Rotor - XT6 4wd
Calipers - XT6 or EA82 (they are identical, you can reuse your old ones if you have rear discs)

ok, thx:p

I'll see how cheap i can get some from the states.

If it turns out to expensive, I'll do it when the L series is finished.

Thx

$300 US plus shipping is the going rate from my inquiries.
But you then have to find someone willing to ship them.

What bugs me is it's possible to buy a whole XT-6 for about the same money.

a member here got some XT6 brakes in on the quiet and from what I gather the finance is like leaving a testicle. Think it was XT6 rear calipers had a larger diameter bore 33mm instead of 30.3 or the like .

Why not just wait?? It sounds like you're starting to burn the candle at both ends!

Pace you're self mate and get it done properly - you don't want to be de-valuing your "door wedge" :p

That's my 5 cents.
