Lib RS EJ20turbo to L series - intercooler/rad setup

Post by AndrewT » Sun Apr 09, 2006 8:49 pm

I'm playing around fitting this, fitting that, an I'm just trying to figure out the best configuration...

Here's what I've got to work with...
- Double core custom made radiator (already modded to suit the Lib engine)
- Air/Water Liberty RS intercooler setup
- 2 x 12" Davies, Craig electric fans
- Deleted air conditioner - forget that for now.

** I can only fit ONE of the 12" fans in between the main radiator and the engine (on the passenger side) - the other one won't clear the power steering pump. This is because of my 3" lift kit.

Here's my ideas so far...
1 - Mount the intercooler radiator in between the main radiator and the engine, mount the two 12" fans on the main radiator on the front side. I know this isn't ideal because the intercooler won't be cooled properly getting already heated air from through the main radiator.
2 - Mount ONE of the 12" fans in between the main radiator and the engine on the passenger side. Mount the other 12" fan on the front of the main radiator on the driver's side. Mount the intercooler radiator on the front of the main radiator on the passenger side (this will require a custom built *smaller* intercooler radiator to be made - I am assuming I can get a smaller one made without loosing any cooling performance by getting a nice dense and slightly thicker core.
3 - Get a custom built larger intercooler radiator made which spans the whole width of the main radiator. Mount it on the front side of the main radiator and then mount the two 12" fans on the front of it. Clearance behind the front bumper looks acceptable here - but if I need more room I can tilt the radiator closer to the engine. There would be a fair bit of room between the radiator and the engine now because of no fans being there.
4 - Fit the two 12" fans on the front of the main radiator, chuck the WAIC in the bin, cut a bloody hole in the bonnet, fit a scoop, fit a top mount intercooler.

At the moment I'm tossing up between option 2 and 3. I know option 4 would be the superior option as far as cooling performance goes but I really do not want a bonnet scoop. I'm going to take the intercooler radiator past a radiator place tomorrow and see what they rekon about making it bigger or smaller.

Thoughts anyone?

Yes I know it would have been much easier to just get a Liberty. Hell why not a Liberty RS or Forester GT then its already turbo.
I like the L series, and already had done all the offroad mods, didn't want to start all over again. Also I love converted cars.

Heater cores in series! Thats a great idea, hadn't thought of that.
Who is Max ?

Why doesn't he just buy a new 100 series: lift it, lock it, tyre it and then he's set!

L's are cool in their own right, and a lifted EJ turbo L will be an awesome offroad machine. Yet to see a Liberty offroad with us yet, I've been waiting with baited breath but it's taking quite a while.....

The standard 100 has a live front axle, because its a 79 in 100 clothes. Comes with the revolutionary new and extremely quiet and powerful 1HZ diesel . GXL and above all have IFS, not that its a hugely bad thing because it allows another feature called "steering".

Can't beleive you can order a new Sahara, which is basically a hotel suite on wheels, and option the rattly-arse 1HD-FTE. Toyota need a new diesel. Worst bit is that the rattlebox costs another $10,000 over the petrol 2UZ V8.

Any other suggestions from anyone?

I'm going to try something else soon....
Repositioning the power steering pump a couple of inches up.
Hopefully this will sove the problem the lift kit causes and let me squeeze both 12" fans between the radiator and the motor. I'll have to delve through all the drive belts at my local discount auto shop to find one big enough of course.

I'm thinking about placing the standard RS AWIC infront of the A/C condensor. If you chop a bit out of the bonnet catch it seems to fit ok. the plastic grille will need to be changed somehow.

well, I actually fitted a FMIC with my ej20t conversion to avoid broblems with the water-to-air system... to cool the engine I bought a custom twin core L-series rad and fitted two L-series fan s in front of it (just inside the grill) on a bracket I made myself... works fine...

vladrulli.... so you have the twincore radiator, with two fans infront of it just behind the grill? Where does the FMIC mount ?

That is exactly what I am doing. But I don't have the AC anymore. Do you still have the AC vladrulli? Its a tight squeeze without the AC condensor hate to see it with one. Especially if your using a 75mm think front mount.

I took the AC off the motor as soon as I got it... as you can imagine I don't really an AC when living in Iceland...

the fans are in front of the radiator just inside the grill...

the intercooler is still for all to see since I haven't figured out how to hide it properly... ;)

here are some pics:

Well, this has turned out to be less of a problem now.

Silly me, I hadn't quite finished the rear gearbox crossmembers so I had the gearbox just propped up with a jack. I had it propped up too high. Now with the gearbox in the correct position, the motor tilts back further. This means I can now fit BOTH my 12" fans in between the motor and the radiator. The WAIC radiator just sits happily in front of the engine radiator.

Some day I will figure out where to fit the air con radiator back in, but theres many months before summertime!

hehe... yeah... keeping the WAIC is the way to go for you... more stable air cooling in hot weather... specially when offroading and low speed driving...

Just to point out, I think you made a mistake with your theory of point number one.

If you've got an intercooler rad mounted out front, then a fan between that & the radiator, the intercooler isn't going to get hot air from the radiator.
When you mount a fan on the front of a radiator, the polarity is wired up the other way so the fan spins in reverse. This means it pushes the air through the rad instead of sucking it like it would normally do from behind.

BTW, I'm mounting a Lib water-air rad on the front, with A/C & a twin core rad.
I'm going to need some seriously slim fans on the back though.
Which ones did you use?
Its good to know that 2 12" will fit though.
