Forester custom made rear bumper?

Post by taza » Wed Mar 23, 2011 5:53 pm

Has anyone made a rear bumper replacement bar from metal for a SF (97-02) Forester? The cost of a Subaxtreme one and getting it to where I live in W.A is somewhere around $3500

I am looking at designing one and building it. I have a workshop and the tools to do it, I just need time. I was also wondering is it illegal to make your own rear bumper? I know in the US you can but what about here in Aus. There are no airbags at the back and as long as the numberplate is visable it should be alright, shouldnt it?
Would I have to get it inspected and get an approved certificate if I were to build it?

Thanks
Taza

im not sure if this is the right spot for it but it is a modification. An admin can feel free to move it if neccessary.

Same as all mods - if the car looks neat and safe, no one will bat an eyelid.

Make sure lights and number plate are visible and the bar doesn't have any sharp corners, and you'll be right. Design it as light as possible too, or the car will drag its bum (HD springs or not).

Alright. Thanks. I might open Autodesk Inventor and start working on some designs.

I think what needs engineering is a tow bar. But no one goes that far unless they're going to do a production of it for sale to others.

I'd like to see what you come up with ;)

The Forester has a tow bar so that's not an issue. Its coming off though so I can sand it back and repaint it along with the rear recovery point.

I have come up with some solutions for my rear bumper and am going to try one when I get paid next.

Doesn't the L-Series have a tow bar?

If you're talking about my L - it does now! Best thing to do with an L series. Very practical and adds to an already practical car IMO. Even better with the EJ ;)

This unit is an after market hayman reece. Works very well.

i have a 99GT foz and am keen on the subaextreme bar, but cant afford anything like that
im keen to see your designs and what it costs you to make,
PM to keep me updated if you can,
i'd need a rear tyre carrier on mine, and jerry can holder if possible as i have rebuilt my boot and my tyre cant be stored there anymore.
i know of universal mounted swing out wheel carriers that can attach to rear bars,
cant wait to see more,

Here is what I have come up with.

Image

It is a very rough idea but could work. Im not exactly sure how it would attach as I haven't pulled the original bumper off before. I did it up in 10mins during my lunch brake so please forgive me if its not too good.
Something made out of aluminum or something similar that's light and strong would work. It is about half as thick as the original plastic one so approach and departure angles are improved and it would be strong enough to stand on and get bashed around abit :D

The number plate would be moved to the left hand side and tow bar could remain in the some spot if you have one. The cost would be somewhere under $1000AU but thats 1/3 of the price of the Subaxtreme one. It would also probably be abit more square and additional light/indicators and/or a wheel holder and Jerry can could be attached if necessary.

Some feedback and input would be nice.

Regards
Taza

i've done a few sketches, just gonna neaten them up, then scan them on my pc,
my mate will try make it and see how we go,
my ideas are functional and simple to build,
wouldnt be too hard to mount either once points are accurately located,
optional extras facillitate jerry can and wheel carriers when would be easily removed.
hope they will be up soon fellas.

I gave up on this  It would be good to get a metal one that smaller than stock, similar to the Subaxtreme one maybe even not as good with a wheel carrier and jerry can holder but alot cheaper would be good.

BIG call!

I'd be voting the foz that SKT built and that Dulagarl now looks after. One mean piece of subaru that one with the H6 and all!

It's the blue one for those that don't know:
