EJ16 conversion questions and advice needed

im in talking with one of the local offroad boys who has a 1989 FUNCO/RIVMASTER buggy that was running in class 3 which is now clubman i believe, his old set up was running an Alfasud flat 4 1300 but after the car sitting in his shed for the past 3 years due to other commitments he wants to bring it back out and move up a class for more competition.
current specs are a VW styled front end, empty H beam with coilovers. this could go to get a A arm front end either retro fitted to the original frame or a whole new frame could be brought from the states in kit form we are currently unsure as to which way we want to go. the engine as i said is currently a alfasud 1300 engine with duel carbs for what it is it has some poke, the gear box is currently i belive the alfa sud transaxle. this whole set up is mounted mid ship.
but to the most important stuff, i.e subaru based stuff.
the limit of class3(?) is 1650cc his plan was to go with a mildly worked alfasud 1500 engine twin carbs, cams the like. To me that isnt much of an advantage.
hence the idea of an EJ16, modern, fuel injected, boxer (lots of pluses when running the boxer in this application) and i might even see about making a franken motor using the 16 block for even more performance (mwah hahaha)
run it though an albins modified renault box to get all that screaming power down, or possibly though a modified 5 speed EJ box, CVs being the problem
ok now for some questions
what cars did the EJ16 motors come in?
how rare are they in australia? i only know of 2 around the place
what power figures are we looking at standard?
anything else that im missing?
