outback twin turbo conversion

Just picked up the donor vehicle for my conversion. Its a my99 outback auto, got 240k on her but is in fantastic condition, i cant believe how well it still drives. Paid 6.5K for it, got 4 new tyres and 6months rego chucked in.
Will be picking up the halfy in 2 weeks, then i can get started on the surgery.
Its got all the panels including the bonnet and factory HID's which is a bonus.

BTW, if anyone wants the old ej25 and auto box from the outback, shoot me an offer. It doesn't blow smoke, it runs nice and smooth and quiet. Seems to be in pretty good shape, i've only driven it about 30km total, but I can't see why it doesn't have plenty of life left in it. You can test drive it for another 2-3 weeks before I take it out, also I can help with delivery anywhere between canberra and sydney.

Very nice work...looks very clean.

Now all you have to do is TT -> T and you are done.

Enjoy the sleeper goodness.

Good stuff. Keeping it auto and street sleeper or going to eventually offroad it?

Cheers

It will mainly function as a mountain bike carrying tool and general practical car/street sleeper. I'm not expecting it to be lightning quick, should be fast enough to give me a tickle every now and again :), and yeah, if the oportunity came up to spray some mud around, who am I to turn that down... haha.

I am also developing a homebrew boost controller using a PIC u-controller, so it will function as a test bed for that (more on this when the conversion is all finished)

Halfcut has landed in my garage!
Went to pick it up this morning, it was about 3in too wide to fit into the trailer. We weren't really sure what to do, so we built up a bed of plastic pallets in the trailer so the halfcut could sit up high clear of the trailer sides. Probably one of the more dodgy things i've ever done, but I pretty determined to get it home today. We strapped it down HARD to make sure it wasn't going anywhere. Anyway, just took it easy on the way home and got her back safely. The old EJ25 was struggling a bit getting up the hills around Bulli, haha.
Got it started up when I got home, it runs sweet!

And i've got the fog lights up for sale, elsewhere, because I can't post for sale on this site.

Always a relief when they start I reckon, esp when you see how they are cut back in Japan. We bought one home on a 5x4 - very dodgy indeed!

Let the fun begin!

But your cut is at least 2WD...or even AWD - ie all wheels (2) would have power!

Am looking fwd to watching this build - please keep us all updated.

Kind-of....

If it is a manual, the centre LSD will slip till the silicon fluid thickens and then it will send some power to the front.

A VTD auto, wouldnt move till the rear speed sensor detected slip and locked the diff to send more power to the front.

The MPT auto is the only one that would drive like a normal FWD

This morning I found a small puddle of ATF fluid under the front left side of the half cut. Hmmm. Its coming from the ATF remote filter which is badly corroded and leaking. Hopefully i won't have too much trouble getting the old filter off, it may just crumble when I put any force on it. More worrying is if flakes of rust have gotten into the auto box it will cause me some problems. I'll just have to cross my fingers and toes that its ok.
It seems strange that the filter would rust so badly...? Its sort of protected from the elements, hiding up under the front quarter panel... The rest of the cut doesn't show that much corrosion, the brake discs are just big balls of rust, but most other things seem ok.

I got it from Just Jap in sutherland, I saw they had a gen2 TT auto cut there waiting for someone to snap it up.
SSS autmotive said they could source one for me, would just have to wait till their next container to get it over here. I found another one at G.R. Constatine Jap Wreckers (wierd name huh?). I didn't try any of the non-sydney based importers. I think Ichiban had a manual one also.

Finally, it is time!

Progress at day 1:
Pulled the twin turbo motor from the halfcut
Changed its timing belt
Fitted new gearbox seal
Fitted new dump pipes to the turbos
Removed the cross member and all the suspension from the cut.
