Ive seen a brumby that has been converted to rear wheel drive and won a few circlework comps at ute musters.....

does anyone know what you have to do to make it rear wheel drive?
take the front driveshafts out and wack it in 4wd?

Precisely. Remove the front axles and keep her in 4WD. You will need to use the outer CV's to hold the wheel on still....
My wagon was RWD for nearly 2 years, they go alright like that, just a little lacking in engine power. Also its noticeably slower on the road than FWD, but hey, I know which I'd rather on a wet corner

how do i use the other c/v's do i take the whole front axles out then what??

Take the whole front axles out, put each one in a vice and whack the outer joint out with a 4lb mallet. That's how I do it.
Then take the outer joint, slide it back into the hub (real easy now without a pesky axle) and do up the castle nut.

righto.....ill get around to it one day so i can cut some circles in the good old brumby

Front handbrake helps get these going too....



You do need to go to the foot brake to hold it though. I'm honest when I say the above picture was done in controlled conditions on private property too. I think it was about 2003. And yes, its the same wagon as in my sig.

nice work tim... i forgot about the good old front handbrake if i converted to rear wheel drive in the ute.... could come in handy...

would it be easy if i wanted to change it back into 4wd just chuck the 2 axels back in..? what did the 4speed box handle the RWD like?

Yeah, chuck them back in and put the lever back down.

The 4spd held up quite nicely to my abuse and torture. A couple of times I had it drop out of 4wd (and start free-revving the front diff stubs) but this was doing the incredibly silly act of rollbacks. The diff was fine as it should be, I know of a 300hp Datsun that uses an R160, and strangely my axles were more than happy with it. The only thing it used to do was it would tear front diff mount bushings every couple of months or so.

It got a lot better when I put the LSD in, however it couldn't put on a smoke show like the one above without a couple of oil slicks and it couldn't break loose in the dry. Would be fine in mud or sand, although I was always left feeling another 20kw or so would make it much more fun.

a tight lsd in the rear end, a little more power, and circle work would be better in 4WD!!

my brumby was rwd when I first bought it, and it was the best donut machine I have ever driven. be warned however, that on a wet road it would do donuts/sideways drifting with no effort and was mostly uncontrolable.

It's a Subaru mate, they last forever. Unless you thrash them silly like me.

Since that photo the wagon has been fitted with a new engine, gearbox, diff, every CV replaced (front and rear) new tailshaft with new unis, the list goes on. If you can fix it you're allowed to break it IMHO.

Mainly these were replaced as upgrades, not because they failed.

Oh and the picture is a screenshot of a small video... that burnout only lasted about 45 seconds and that shot was taken 10 seconds in. It ends with the right rear kicking away its tread then blowing...

There are several reasons its not being posted, I won't go into them though....

That looks to be the best way to experience the moment...keep the tailgate up...cough,cough splutter

rwd only also looks to be a good anti theft procedure - knock it back into fwd and hey hey - no go !!
